~I have a good feeling about this one!

  • Damistar

When they say plastic, do they mean resin? Or is Spartan going to be doing injection molding now?

    • Cergorach

      I really hope so!

    • dinodoc

      I believe they mean plastic.

    • erion

They mean plastic. In discussions just after the initial announcements on their company message boards, it was made clear that this new line would not impact their existing resin or metal production because it would be injection molded plastic produced in the UK.

  • Interrogator_Chaplain

I would’ve said this game is a slam dunk when I first heard about it, but now that I’ve played Armada, this game’s got its work cut out for it.
If only Battlefleet: Gothic was still around, we’d be in a golden age of tabletop space combat games.
Firestorm Armada, Star Wars Armada, Halo Fleet Battles.
And is that Dystopian Wars thing a space fleet game?

    • pompeyladBFP

God.. This looks great! Love the halo background

    • JPMcMillen

Dystopian Wars is on the water, but it’s the same company as Firestorm Armada so it’d be a bit silly for them to make two different space fleet games.

      • ForgottenLore

Yet they are making this halo game. So they ARE making two different space fleet games.

        • StingrayP226

From what I’ve read its 2 different rule sets though…

          • ForgottenLore

Really? I had not heard that. Somewhat surprising since ALL of Spartans other games are built on very very similar engines.

Still, doesn’t really change the fact that they are competing with themselves by making 2 games in essentially the same genre.

          • StingrayP226

It was in an interview… granted the question really comes down to HOW much different. It could be set on the same basics with a different feel (like DW vs FSA).

Also as a Firestorm Armada player I’m unsure how it will pan out as like you said two different space games from one company.

          • erion

I think it has to be a lot faster playing than Firestorm Armada. The starter box alone has 49 miniatures in it. That’s about triple the models that you get in one of the Firestorm Armada starter games.

      • Damistar

Actually, it’s land sea and air. The water fleets are usually the first released so people don’t realize that there’s more to it.

    • dubhgilla

What happened to BFG do the GW police raid your house if you play it?

      • Erik Setzer

It’s not sold any more, so even if people can get a download of the rules somewhere, getting the ships is pretty expensive. For folks who don’t have fleets already, it’s not easy to get into.

        • dubhgilla

It not that hard to google the rules and you have a Tau and a Demiurg fleet to play with when this is released.

    • Agent OfBolas

Unfortunately GW can’t let people download their rules from their page for some reason … they were available in Specialist Games for free, anyone owning GW miniatures could download it and have fun …

But it seems that hosting few PDF documents is too big effort for such company as GW.

    Halo and wargaming
why does this hobby know exactly how to steal from my wallet. First Star Wars, then Infinity going for the Cyberpunk angle, and now this…

  • Jake Nolan

I’d love to see Gears of War turned into a wargame, going from small squad skirmishes up to massed battles between Locust and the Gears.

  • I love the fact that it is _Spartan_games wo make this game 😀

  • Sean

So there are only 23 models shown of the 49. Do we think there will be more models in this box of just larger fleets?

  • daboarder

I miss Gothic 🙁 Something about ramming a gigantic cathedral into another gigantic cathedral…in SPACE!

    • euansmith

      With frickin’ laser beams!!!

      • Agent OfBolas

And with whole fighter/bomber squadrons destroyed within seconds, setting up broadsides, firing space torpedos (let’s pray for those poor orks that were launched in torpedos and … missed their target :P) and the best and the most fluffy order you could assign to ship …

        “BRACE FOR IMPACT !!!!”

Wargameing fan who never played BFG is missing something big.

  • ZeeLobby

Anyone got a recommendation for a good BFG replacement these days. I’ve been tempted by armada, but I’m anxious to see what Drop Fleet Commander is like (especially with Phil Kelly at the helm). Think it’ll be worth the wait? I’ve played enough Halo and Star Wars videogames to avoid them on the table, and Armada ships just seem too… Realistic (god I miss BFG’s floating cathedrals).

    • Aaron LeClair

Haven’t played Armada yet but it looks good. Also heard great things from Spartan Games other Firestorm Armada(out for a while). Besides them I haven’t heard of any other games worth noting.

Personally I wouldn’t mind giving Firestorm a try but on one would go in with me on the starter box.(which they seem to change every year or so!)

      • StingrayP226

The new 2 player starter was created to match Planetfall’s 2 player starter as both of the armies are the same: Directorate and Aquan Prime. I think it was rather nice to pull away from the main two human factions and feature the evil corporate overlords against the aquatic based aliens.

      • ZeeLobby

        Awesome, thanks!

        • Aaron LeClair

no problem! Download the rules try with a friend before you buy! Super Prox a space marine as a Battle Ship. lol

    • Agent OfBolas

As a huge BFG fan with tons of miniatures and hours spent on this game … I’ve found new love – X-Wing Miniature Game. It’s simple, great and fun to play.

Try it, the starter is cheap, contains 3 models (you can play with them right away!) and all the rules or measures you need to play….

But care. this game is addictive 😉

      • ZeeLobby

Haha, have you tried Star Wars: Armada yet? I’ve also always been attracted to like capital ship battles and large swarms of attack craft. Even though X-Wing doesn’t have that does it still scratch that itch?

  • Sash Faderhead Madhatter

    this looks pretty good

  • hive_angel

I wonder if the games will have perfect balance or always have a tip in favor of the Covenant.

  • erion

Just revealed on the Spartan Games FB page — the Custom Dice are not just d6 with a special symbol on one face, but fully customized d6 with game-related symbols on every face akin to Block Dice from Blood Bowl or order dice from BFG or Epic.
