Goatboy’s 40k – Scary, Spooky, Deadly Angels!

Ravenwing_Co.

Goatboy here with the updated FAQ for the Ravenwing Detachment and it got me thinking about what kind of Terrible list I could utilize with it.

I think the Dark Angels Psychic powers might be interesting to use with the resurgence of the Tau shooting so that had me looking at ways to “use” and abuse a crap ton of Librarians, bikers, and other forms of nonsense.  Again this is a pure Goatboy list so expect some copying and pasting as well as a lot of reused HQ choices.  I am trying to force one complete direction for this army and the only way to truly get this sort of use is by using a ton of the same things over and over again.

Bringing on the Terror – Dark Angels 3 Source List.

Librarian, Lvl 2, Bike, Force Sword

Yeah this looks like a weird mess of nonsense.  I mean – sure you have a ton of Psychic dice and if you go all in on the Dark Angel powers you could cast so many weird spells, sapping the will of a ton of stuff, and maybe surviving whatever shooting phase you have to fight against.  It does make me laugh to think of a Storm Surge unit getting really spooked, down to BS/WS 1 and trying to utilize those Marker Lights to bring it up to a better BS skill. The one Drop pod is to give a ride to Ezekiel and allow him to land where he needs to.  I still wonder if you drop a few librarians, get more Bikers and hope to MSU yourself to victory.  Or heck just use more Black Knights.  I blaming having to paint a ton of them these last few months for this list.

Dark Angels – RIDE!!!

  • Master Avoghai

To me, RW strike force is made to get black knights

If you want meltas either take attack bikes squadrons or get a RWAS beside this to get the +1BS when the LS hits the same target as the bikes.

    • Thomas Gardiner

This. Also, the Attack Squadron is just straight-up better anyway. Meltaguns hitting at BS5? Yes please!

  • Krzysztof Jasinski

    wait …..
Librarius concave isn’t allowed in Da codex. Is it ?

    • Muninwing

      they get one.

plus, not only do they have their own (which in fairness is just a bit different, requiring the SC librarian), they get a boost to an interromancy spell out of it.

    • Ben Johnson

oh dear, somebody didnt know that Dark Angels had the librarius conclave in 6th ed because of a data slate and the vanilla’reens only got on the bandwagon in 7th……..

  • James Mcclennan

sorry but why was it not scary before and why is it now?

    • Robert Reimers

Difference is that the detachment before could only take sammael as a hq, now it can have whatever no name you want as long as they’re on a bike.
More psychic shenanigans without the expensive (though awesome) hero compulsory

      • Muninwing

yeah… even without the librarius conclave, having 3 libbys on bikes is pretty cool. more cool if they’ve got a darkshroud.

  • Robert Reimers

Don’t know if I’d go the CAD, just swap around to pure bikes/support.
Also, no Darkshroud? every cheese RW list needs a couple. That and shroud of heroes on a solo bike libby

    • WellSpokenMan

I thought the same thing, but without the CAD Zeke will be an army of one. He won’t last long like that.

      • Muninwing

Zeke should be able to take a bike… one more overlook…

  • OolonColluphid

Consider dropping the Scout squad. Replace with another Tact sqaud, give both Rhino or Razorback DTs instead of Drop pods. No point to a Ravenwing army if their not mobile.(Scouts are better with Deathwing)
Like Avoghai suggested drop the Bike Squads and replace them with RW Black Knights/Attack bikes.

Also drop a few of the Liberians.Cut them back to four. One plus the Conclave. Give the extra guy Divination and take a Land Speed Vengeance. All the downsides of the Vengeance are virtually eliminated with Prescience. If you have extra points squeeze in a Darkshroud while both cheap options to get Assault Cannons.

    • Koszka

I wouldn’t really trust putting zeke in a minimum tactical squad for protection unless they we riding in a rhino to keep up with those other librarians. good call.

Do you need to take zeke in that formation? He just feels a bit out of place in this list.
Speaking of the night shroud, what about that formation with the shroud + land speeder squadron? I keep hearing a lot of awesome things about it.

      • OolonColluphid

        Zeke is required.
You mean the Raven Wing support squad? It says Dark Shroud or Vengeance. More Overwatch at full BS is always a good thing.

  • WellSpokenMan

Needs more Ravenwing Support Squad. Kit the speeders however you want and run them with a Darkshroud. Typhoons would be my choice for the flexibility and range. You don’t need that many Libbys.

  • TweetleBeetle

Wow. It’s nice to see people below actually discussing tactics and list ideas, and not just misusing words like “cheese”, “spam”, “something about GW screwing my unrelated army” for a change.

    • Muninwing

well, it’s nice to see a list that is a little more take-all-comers instead of encouraging spam.

also good to see a list that works without having to be stupid. sadly, badly-balanced GW rules make that rare…

and DA were screwed for years, so it’s great to see them get functional rules.

    • Muninwing

and most people are overlooking the silly melta spam on the bikes, because there are cooler units that can be fielded…

    • Muninwing

and… most of the tactics being addressed are army-creation pros and cons… not even proper usage, adaptive strategy, or the like.

which feeds into the general distaste many have for GW games… that the list is expected by many to pilot itself.

if the game is unbalanced enough that tactics and strategy on the board matter less than building a good list, then the game is boring — just let your list hammer the other guy into the ground and don’t even play it yourself.

so sorry to burst your bubble…

i’m usually in the camp of giving GW the benefit of the doubt, but even i cannot defend their carelessness. whoever pays you to do so must really give good rates.

  • Master_Toddius

This is actually not that interesting. Way too top heavy. And you wasted points on unequipped tactical / scout squads.
Its all about OP grav guns on bikes now. Tank hunting should be left to attack bikes / speeders. With the new errata you can have up to 3 Librarians on bike for the RW Formation. I don’t really see a need for more. The list becomes really unbalanced beyond that, especially at 1850pts.

    • Muninwing

      “it’s all about…”

      how incredibly boring.

      • Master_Toddius

Well, when you face the same stupid army types in every tournament (lots of gargantuan creatures) we’re forced to take grav guns. I personally feel grav guns are OP big time. But it is what it is.

        • WellSpokenMan

If you are going to run drop tacs, they really should have Grav Cannons. I’d put some Grav on the MSU bikes as well.

  • Tesq

well is not so senselss unless most of pshycic power are not blessing or malediction. which do not require the roll to hit which make you always able to use jink.

  • Andrew Thomas

Again, no axes. If you really need melee AP 2, grab a Techmarine or Terminators. At least then you have the saves, and can reliably 2+ most infantry and MCs.
