40K: Guilliman’s Big Reveal – Rules & More!

The Warhammer TV Team has pulled the covers off of Guilliman – The Primarch is BACK and ready for action!

Well folks, if you’ve been tuning in to Warhammer Live to watch the Twitch Stream then you probably saw what’s in store: Roboute Guilliman is back with a vengeance and he’s got the rules to match!

via Games Workshop

Stat wise, he’s WS 9, and has straight 6’s across the board. His Leadership is 10 and he’s rocking a 2+ save (more on that below). He’s also an Monstrous Creature (Character) and has all those special rules on top of everything else! Watching the stream we also know he’s got Feel No Pain, Eternal Warrior and a bunch of other special rules, too!

Lord Commander of the Imperium: Friendly Units from the Armies of the Imperium re-roll failed Morale checks and Fear and Pinning test while Guilliman is on the battlefield.

Primarch of the XIII Legion: You can choose to enact the Devastator, Assault and Tactical  Doctrines (see Codex: Space Marines) once each per game (in addition to any you can already use). When one of these Combat Doctrines is enacted, all Ultramarines models in your army are affected.

Unyielding Will: Roboute Guilliman’s Leadership is not subject to negative modifiers of any kind and he may re-roll Deny the Witch tests.

Warlord Trait:

Absolute Mastery: Roboute Guilliman has all of the Command Traits from Warhammer 40,000: The Rules.

Before we get to his armor, let’s talk about his weapon. He wields both The Emperor’s Sword and The Hand of Dominion. These are combined to form one profile – Strength 10, AP 1 and they have the following special rules: Melee, Armourbane, Concussion, Soul Blaze, Touch of the Emeror, Whirling Flame.

Some of it was cut off but watching the stream we learned the following:

Touch of the Emperor: Any attacks with this weapon (that roll a 6 to hit) are resolved at Strength D rather than 10.

Whirling Flame: This rule is pretty long, but basically Guilliman can sacrifice his regular 6 attacks to a swing at every enemy unit with models within 1″ of him. He gets a number off attacks on those units equal to the number of models they have within 1″ of him.

The Hand of Dominion has a built in ranged weapon as well:

Range 24″ Strength 6 Ap 2 and is Assault 3, Rending. He’s basically got the best heavy bolter ever created under his arm!

Now, on to the Armour of Fate:

The Armour of Fate confers a 3+ invulnerable save. In addition, if Roboute Guilliman is slain, place a marker at the spot at which he was slain. At the beginning of your next turn, roll a dice. On a 4 or more Guilliman is restored by his armour – place him as close as possible to the marker, more than 1″ from any units, with D3 wounds remaining. Otherwise Guilliman is slain. if the marker is on the battlefield at the end of the game, Guilliman is considered to be slain.

So not only does he have a 2+ save normally, he’s got a 3++ and if you happen to chew through all 6 wounds, he’s got Feel No Pain AND on a 4+ he’s got a chance to get back up with D3 Wounds. The Robo-Primarch is HERE!

For the Emperor!

  • Aurion Shidhe

    But will he blend?

    • WhenDidVicesBecomeVirtues

The Armour of Fate confers a 3+ invulnerable safe to blending. In addition, if Roboute Guilliman is blended, place a marker at the spot at which he was blended. At the beginning of your next turn, roll a dice. On a 4 or more, Guilliman is NOT BLENDED.

    • Dumbcow1

I’ve asked BlendTec, no reply yet far.

      • jmaximum

        Maybe ask Magic Bullet instead?

        • palaeomerus

1000 degree knife deserves a shot at this.

  • Jared van Kell

The big reveal is that Guilliman is secretly a Necron.

    • euansmith

“All friendly units use his Ld of 10 with no negative modifiers at all
and if they are Armies of the Imperium they re-roll for morale, pinning
      and fear tests.”

Honestly why don’t they just say, “…ignore anything requiring a Leadership roll”? I mean, there is about a 0.7% chance of failing a LD: 10 re-rollable roll.

      • Xodis

Seriously, Leadership rolls are so mitigated across the board, why is it still in the game?

        • John Traupman

i think this is vitally important for psychic scream mixed with LD modifiers in normal cases. this kind of make him more immune to that

        • grim_dork

Because of that stupid Ork table.

  • Lord Elpus

Oh How I wish Zogwort was still around…

    • Drpx

The resulting squigg would still be broken.

      • Lord Elpus

But it would be in blue armour; and the resultant rage would be hilarious.

    • william timonen

Not to be that person, But I think it only worked on independant characters?

      • Lord Elpus

Robute’s still a Character… besides who knows what his rules would be by now.. pity they dropped him.

        • BrianDavion

but he’s not an INDEPENDANT character

    • Old zogwort
      • Emprah

        Beware the Emperor’s biteyest.

  • Matthew

How does he have fnp? (Maybe I’m missing it)

And doesn’t being a monstrous creature mean he can’t join any units aka no bodyguards

Hence why they avoided that in 30k

    • Lord Elpus

His armour is also a life support machine that he can never take off. So it does tie with the fluff.

      • Aezeal

All SM armour is life support machinery.. which is probably reflected in their armor save.

        • Lord Elpus

His has a life support machine specifically built into it by Cawl though. It’s what’s keeping him from keeling over.

        • palaeomerus

See he’s still poisoned by Fulgrim’s whatsithingum venom stuff. The armor negates it which is why he woke up. His normal “grow back severed limbs and regenerate yer spine” Primarch regeneration is compromised so he is cyborg via life-support exoskeleton now to make him mobile & aware again.

    • John Traupman

the pictures don’t show it but he gets it. notice they cut off the normal special rules on the left of the page like Eternal Warrior etc.

  • Nathan Grant

    What is hos cost?

    • Aezeal

He’s free if you use any SM formation which included Ultramarines.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

plus three times per game you can kick your opponent in the nads.

        • ChubToad

Don’t forget the “wedgie of the emperor” rule. One use only give your opponent a wedgie only after kicking him in the nads.

          • Mr.psyker

The titi twist of fate table must be rolled on when a 4+ is rolled on a D1 you twist until the marker is removed from play!

    • Lord Elpus

      7 points.

  • orionburn

Dayum. Those are some pretty impressive stats. Now bring back muh Lion!

    • Lord Elpus

Give him some D weapon shots in the face. Let’s see him laugh them off.

      • Randy Randalman

Which is why D weapons are in the game. That said, there are so few in 40k, in terms of reliable shooting. That’s why they are never in top, or even slightly above mediocre lists.

        • Lord Elpus

Yeah, my Eldar army really struggles to field those rare D weapons..

  • Deacon Ix

I can’t see the leadership thing provoking any arguments at all…

Another example of this does this – but wait this counteracts it – GW at it’s finest.

    • BrianDavion

eh it makes sense though, it reflects that Gulliman is a strategic genius without equal.

      • Derek Lee

Primarch with the Emperor’s sword? Yeah I’d follow that. The way stories go, that would be safer than waiting in a trench on a planet that could explode at any time or any reason.

        • BrianDavion

yeah, if I was in the 40k universe I’d be following Gulliman easily. I’d be of the opion that mankind was saved, and that “The emperor returned his avenging son to us to save us all!”

  • Private Skittles

    His Special armour raises questions…

If it’s a one-of-a-kind expert job from Cawl what will the other loyal primarchs (assuming some of them are coming) look like without the same attention? Will they be more reflective of their Horus Heresy Aesthetic?

The “crafted by the finest artificers of _____” line is used a lot for equipment upgrades but would glare if the same on a Primarch level.

    • Lord Elpus

I look forward to seeing them;especially Russ and Mortarion.

      • Private Skittles

Right? I think i’m looking forward to Lion & Dorn b/c of interest + lack of FW models.

Russ and Mortarion will be epic though, I wonder if Russ will look a bit twisted from his time in the warp.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

          I bet Russ will be a half-werewolf.

Mortarion will be a giant daemonic grim reaper.

          • palaeomerus

The Khan will be a motorcycle centaur cyborg thing with swords for arms. he will shoot angry dark eldar out of a special “witch-gun” in his chest.

        • Lord Elpus

I hope he looks more Feral too! Not looking like wulfen, but wild, bearded..

        • Emprah

Dorn, Ferrus and Sanguinious are very dead.

          • lorieth

            Not just “mostly dead”?

          • BrianDavion

I could see them pulling a fast one and having Dorn be alive but the other two.. yeah dead

          • palaeomerus

We represent da Lollipop guild, da lollypop guild, da lollipop guild…

          • Lord Elpus

            Well Dorn’s hand is dead…

          • BrianDavion

losing a hand hardly stops someone from crushing evil. see well.. anyone named Skywalker čÖé

          • Lord Elpus

He’s more machine now than Primarch…

          • BrianDavion

            “twisted and…. awesome!”

          • palaeomerus

            Or Yarrick.

          • palaeomerus

Rub some dirt on it! Walk it off! No quitting!

          • Shawn

They can bring them back, just as Fabius Bile. Then the Iron Hands can recall Manus’ spirit that’s secretly trapped in Ironbreaker, and boom Primarch back. Then the tenth legion and their successors take their revenge on the Emperor’s Children

          • palaeomerus

Sanguinious is in a coffin being used as a blood transfusion thingie. Ferrus needs a new body. Dorn is thought to be dead and they have a hand/hands that suggest he is probably dead.

    • Mr_Pickles

Can’t aVindicare Assassin still take the invul save gear breaking shot? It’d be funny to crack Guilleman’s new armour….

      • Karru

The Vindicare Assassin’s Shield Breaker Round only makes it so you are not allowed to take Invulnerable saves against it. It doesn’t destroy the equipment unfortunately.

    • Timotheus

I know it might be far-fetched and a lot of you GW-kiddos including BoLS would not even prefer this over having all their favourite legendary SciFi-Rambos towering assembled and painted next to their tactical marines on the table but…..what if GW WON’T bring back all other possible primarchs?? What if they take the last exit on the road to loosing all their left integrity and make the miraculous return of two primarchs a unique highlighted happening and choose not to mock the fluff and storyline of recent decades formed by way more skilled and dedicated writers and bring back every legendary character and their daughter just to boost sales on the current generation of sensationalists?? I don’t really dare to hope this but most people here seem to think of it as being impossible….

    • Derek Lee

They would probably be better fighters: thinking about Khan and Russ especially. Russ discards equipment like it’s going out of style and you would be lucky if Vulcan doesn’t show up nude for as many times as he’s been destroyed by atmospheric re-entry, or body slamming “the Beast” into a Deathstar reactor.

They will all have relics. Lion’s will be just as neat but picked up from antique shops / Renaissance show blacksmiths instead of straight from factory like RG.

Ferrus and Sanguinius would be straight up manifestations of the Emperor’s will and would be made of pure Emperor power and may be Sigmarine/Celestine angel gold or very well be covered in skulls and flames ala Legion of the Damned. What could be manufactured and be cooler than that?

  • Aztec43

How was Skarbrand used in a Khorne Daemonkin army?

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

      Allied daemons?

  • Eric Hite

So what he can walk up the field 6″ each turn? I think making him a Monstrous Creature was a giant mistake. Don’t get me wrong super excited for this box I play Ultramarines and Grey Knights but I fail to see how he will keep up with the army.

  • John Traupman

    So Absolute Mastery gives him:

friendly units use his perma 10 LD within 12″
Enemy units w/in 12″ use lowest LD
Move through cover for army w/in 12″
    +1″ to Run/Charge to army w/in 12″
reroll all To Hit for army w/in 12″

not too shabby of a Special Rule there…

    • petrow84

Next time: He knows all the special rules from Warhammer 40000: The rules, and can apply at his own leisure.

      • euansmith

“My Lord, Guilliman, what ails thee?”

        “My… head… it is… spliiiiiting… the pain… the confusion… the endless contra-dictions…”

“Darn, I knew we were pushing it having him know ALL the special rules!”

      • Lord Elpus

But still get called out by a scout for not knowing them…

    • Eric Hite

Sadly no he only knows the Command Warlord Traits, not all of the them.

      • John Traupman

yep, edited shortly after i posted the original

        • Eric Hite

I wish he knew all of them. It would make sense for him.

  • Steve L Duelist

Nice but these are not Cypher’s rules

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

You come to an article about Girlyman and want to know about Cypher?

      • Steve L Duelist

Ya, gotta hunt him, and know my foe

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

The heck you will! Cypher will kick your butt!

  • Lord Elpus

Why? Nothing bad happened at Prospero.

    • NNextremNN

The bright future of the imperium was buried at Prospero.

      • Lord Elpus

Ha! As I recall it was a nice day out for the Wolves.

        • NNextremNN

Dogs are always happy if they are let loose by their masters.

          • Lord Elpus

Anyone with nipple horns deserves all they get. So prospero burned, nothing of any value to the Imperium was lost! Well maybe a few wolves but nothing more.

          • NNextremNN

As if anyone would miss some mutated wannabe wolves.

          • Lord Elpus

Talking of mutation, how did the Rubric work out.. scare the entire army with a vacuum cleaner. Wonder if Ol one eye is still smarting after getting beaten by Logan and now by Robute in the short span of two months! Bet he’s glad he came back now..

          • NNextremNN

At least he came back instead of some other hairy hobo.

          • Lord Elpus

            Well Lionel will be back.

          • NNextremNN

The Lion still has a home … at least parts from it.

          • Lord Elpus

So does Russ, unlike someone with only one eye, remind me again, what happened at Prospero??

          • NNextremNN

Do I have to remind you of Wrath of Magnus and how the space puppies lost their homeworld and most of it’s inhabitants and any chance to create new space puppies?

          • Matthew Hoag

Clearly you haven’t read Wrath of Magnus because none of that is true.

          • Lord Elpus

Fenris is still there. Unlike Prospero….

          • georgelabour

The imperium also lost some S&M nuns who never talked.

Chauvinists and leather freaks would argue those are indeed tragic losses for all of mankind.

          • Lord Elpus

They gave their lives in service for which they were toasted. A good death.

          • Iconoc1ast

            Whats wrong with leather….

          • palaeomerus

You’d have to ask the War Hounds/World Eaters about that. Wolves wouldn’t know.

        • Moose

But the wolves lost so many men on prospero, and the thousand sons didnt even fight back until the wolves landed in the last city on prospero. Not to mention most of the legion and fleets where sent away by magnus on purpose So the wolves werent even fighting anything close to the TS full strength čśë

          • Lord Elpus

Like I said, a nice day out! Having a nice afterlife of quaffing and carousing is nothing to fear.

      • BrianDavion

sure, when Magnus cast the spell that peirced the defences of terra

    • palaeomerus

If Magnus had kept the shields up and answered the phone….ah if only.

  • Drpx

But how does he compare to a Wraithknight?!

    –40k community response.

    • Emprah

      Still not enough cheese.

    • BrianDavion

wraithknights are STILL the most criminally under costed units in 40k.

    • MechBattler

On average rolls, he kicks it’s can.

He’s I6, has 6 attacks, hits on 3s, gets rerolls on to hits of 1, wounds it on 2s, get’s Str D on hits of 6 and ignores it’s armor all the time.

The Wraithknight is I5, only has 4 attacks, and only hits on 5s. The only real chance it has of taking Guilliman out (assuming he doesn’t kill it before it can even swing) is to roll a 6 on the destroyer table, on the probably only 1 attack that hits.

Of course that’s a comparison in a vacuum. There will be other factors in a game that influence it, but 1v1, Wraithknight’s odds against Guilliman aren’t very good.

  • Rainthezangoose

So he can’t join a unit?

    • Lord Elpus

      Shouldn’t think so.

    • euansmith

Maybe there will be a new Monstrous Creature Formation allowing all to the upcoming Primarchs to join in to Ultra-Mega-Super-Duper Friends.

    • Xodis

You don’t join a Primarch in battle, you just follow and clean up what he leaves behind.

      • Lord Elpus

So Robute is a messy eater then?

        • Xodis

          Probably lol

      • LunaWolf

I dunno, he’ll be the slowest thing on the table, so following him seems like a bad idea…

        • Xodis

I think his corpse will be excellent cover lol

        • BrianDavion

him being a MC does mean he won’t be loadable in a LR or something sadly.

      • SisyphusIsHappy

True that. Reading about Vulkan literally waging a one man war centuries after the Horus Heresy was freaking cool. He died a ton, but being a perpetual he would come back eventually. Saved a colony world by himself as a result.

  • I’m still trying to figure out the timing of a marker removal. As it isn’t defined in the BRB that I can find, or this model (like it is for Tau Markerlight Counters) I don’t know if the dead primarch marker ever gets removed.

I don’t think it does. So if you take him down and he gets up, at least you’ll score for him. Not that taking him down is gonna be easy!

This brings up problems with multiple markers staying in play, and him possibly teleporting around, so that makes me assume they DID want the markers removed, but the rules never call for it (and other rules do, setting precedent).

I’ll keep looking for how markers work (I can only find blast markers atm, and I’m reasonably sure that’s not what they meant). Maybe it’s someplace I missed.

    • Yea, as it is currently worded, the marker stays and he will get up maybe the turn right after. Or the one after that. But never fully dead.

      • Sounds thematic for him, but then you never pick up the marker, so if you take him down the first time you get your points. I’m hoping the use of “the marker” implies “last marker placed” in the case of multiple markers then.

    • Ak318

The wording though says if you fail the 4+ he is slain. Which looking at past models with the coming back from the dead rule means he would not get a second chance. What i think is super powerful is he can die any number of times.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

I played against Celestine the other day and to be honest she is so tough that it is simply tedious and you end up ignoring her. My opponent was slightly embarrassed. I really don’t like this trend for regenerating characters, it makes the game very dull and frustrating for the other guy, they are simply unfun in the same way as Tau assault phase moves and Necron RPs are.

        • Ronin

You too? Just fought a Celestine deathstar with Wolfstar and it was so annoying. Plus the way the map set up was angled made it hard to flank them to shoot from an angle. Took an Iron Hands smashf- to bring the unit down, but then I had wulfen on my back.

        • Garrett Alain Colas

I know in my meta I’ve been using a lot less lascannons because getting a hit and having the ap to skip their save doesn’t even matter anymore now that everyone has 3+ invulns, some sort of FnP, and now regeneration.

It’s basically a big game of wounding/hitting on 6+ and hoping out of 30+ shots, 2 or 3 make it through.

You see it with Tyranids, their best unit is a flying hive tyrant with a gun that has a like 12 twinlinked shots, but very middling strength and AP. But that gun ends up dealing more wounds to things like necrons and what not, because you can’t break through wraith 3++ anyways, so why even bother with AP lower than 4?

That’s where we’re at in the meta. Regeneration and pseudo-FNP are the norm. 3+ invluns for everyone. AP is becoming useless.

  • SilentPony

And then Lukas the Trickster removes him from play on a flat roll off…

    • Xodis

Dont worry, that will be the first thing mentioned in the FaQ

“Any ability that would remove Guilliman from play instead leaves his token behind”

      • palaeomerus

Then the Token splits open and out hops Ursarkar Creed with a full company of storm troopers and three heavy weapon teams.

    • Lord Elpus

I’d pay to see that happen! There’s a reason Lukas is brilliant.

    • wibbling

Anyone playing badly enough to not choose precisely who and when Guilliman fights deserves it!

  • Matthew Hoag

30k version is better balanced, more useful, and more interesting than this. I also think the 30k version is a better representation of Guilliman.

    • Lord Elpus

      Can’t use it in 40k though…

      • Matthew Hoag

Technically you can play 30k and 40k armies with and against each other (at least until 8th drops and 30k stays with 7th). Tournaments will never allow it though because it would disrupt the meta.

  • DeCold

    Slaanesh? Is that you?

    • Lord Elpus

Slaanesh is out at the moment, this is Alpharius. Can I take a message?

      • lorieth

Presumably She’s gone to get a drink?

        • Lord Elpus

Yeah, just don’t ask of what.

          • palaeomerus

            Dirty Elf-God boot.

      • palaeomerus

Get a load of that wacky Callidus dame who thinks she’s Alpharius when we all know I’m Alpharius.

        • Lord Elpus

You’re not Alpharius. You’re a very naughty boy.

  • MarcoT

I wonder how he’ll stack up against Magnus. Magnus has to jump through a few hoops to get that save, but adds rerolls and flying. Magnus does (lots) more damage at range, but Roboute seems to win up close. Magnus is quick, Roboute is slow. Magnus doesn’t help his army (he even steals their power dice) besides the damage he causes, while Roboute makes the whole army perform better. Magnus has nipple horns, Roboute has a flaming sword. Hard to compare the two.

    • Lord Elpus

Magnus can double as a hat and coat rack whilst Robute can toast marshmallows.

      • NNextremNN

Well I guess in that case Guiliman wins with the marshmallows.

  • Amaya89

So mixed about this one… I like the way they are going with things, but they have made this particular guy SO Mary Sue. It would have been more cool if he didn’t have amazing rules all around, if he wasn’t Ultra, and if the model had a more ‘human’ element to it rather than Mr Perfect.

After reading the Chaos, Sisters, and Eldar stuff, this release just seems too over the top. A good compromise would have been seeing something fluffy happen to Abaddon to give him a similar statline, just to give things a bit of a balanced feel.

    • NNextremNN

Well they are not done with the story Gathering of Storm is just the first chapter. But yes I agree he is a bit too much undead.

    • Zakading

Just wait until the full rules and point costs are out before complaining about how OP things are, now will ya? He could be 600 points for all we know.

And he’s a freaking Primarch, he’s supposed to be really damn strong and work incredibly well with his boys. Magnus is also an absolute monster with Tzeentch demons.

  • Admiral Raptor

What a beast! My Ultramarines are going to love having their spiritual liege back! My only concern right now is that he can’t get into a transport as an MC. He’ll need some kind of movement help to be usable.

    • Bonemaw

so easy, just use lib concave with tiggy and do the switcharoo spell. easy pz

      • BrianDavion

that could start to get expensive fast,

    • Lord Elpus

      You’ll be fielding Mat Ward??

  • Byungwook Kim

He is a monster? Well then… won’t wraithknights one shot him because he cannot join anything?

    • Nyypp├Ą

It’s about time imperials get to taste the nid realities.

    • MechBattler

Oh, I’m sure he’s got something that let’s him take a terminator retinue or honor guard or some such. I’d be surprised if they didn’t include a way to give him meatshields.

  • Nyypp├Ą

    Reroll everything all the time!

  • Chris Talley

    Any word on point cost?

    • Zakading

Heard that he’s 350, though didn’t really see a solid source for it.

      • Reece-Lancs Hobbies

That seems abit low for what you get, can’t imagine him less than atleast 450

  • aargh00

Concussion, eh GW? Can’t even get the names of your own damn rules right anymore?

  • piglette

Meh. Ghaz can still punch him with his power klaw.

  • Greg

As an Eldar player, reading all the rules, I’m wondering what the hell I should do with my 275 point S6 Ap2 hitting 3+/5++ MC….

If people start to use this mofo, I’m gonna bring the Avatar of Khaine, just for the lulz.

  • Terrance Michael Winterton
