Genestealer Cult: Shadow War Armageddon Rules

The purple people eaters are coming to Shadow Wars Armageddon in style. Take a look:

Here we see some of the Cult Specialists, to add onto the basic gang member we have seen previously. Watch out for those Purestrains! The elite Hybrids are fairly scary too. Also, no stopping the Purestrians with your stub pistols – they are going to reach you…

Next up, the GS Cult weapons.  These are pretty much the same weapon stats from Necromunda, and that’s a good thing.  What I love about these types of “gritty small scale” games is the detail and viability of non military grade equipment.  I like the fact that a bolter would be a big deal, and is something to be feared. It should make the Marine factions something to be feared, even if they are merely scouts.

Previous Stats

We have already seen some other stats at GAMA including these:

Orks

Genestealer Cult standard gang members.

I can hardly wait for this game. It should be hitting the shelves very shortly.

If you buy 20 copies of the game you can build this. It is cool.

~How do you think they will balance the super elite factions like Dark Eldar or Necrons with the rif-raf?

  • Ravingbantha

Looks a lot like 2nd edition rules. Can’t help but wonder if this is a sign of how 8th edition is going to be.

    • ZeeLobby

Hope not. I hope it’s somewhere inbetween. There’s nothing horribly wrong with 40K rules now, it’s the imbalance that’s been killing everything. If it at least brings back the movement stat and modifiers i’ll be happy, but having different effective ranges on guns, etc. is just too much. I’d love losing TLOS as well.

Now Effective ranges and TLOS make more sense in a skirmish type game like this.

      • Walter Vining

TLOS is probably the biggest thing right now. There really isn’t all the imbalance people think there is, its just terrain really doesn’t mean anything.

        • ZeeLobby

I don’t see how you can make such a broad claim though. So what, if TLOS went away suddenly Orks would be on par with Eldar? I find that very hard to believe, considering they can still easily outmaneuver and outshout Orks.

          • Walter Vining

because now the orks have way to get there in numbers. even with the maneuverability of the elder there will be more orks that they cannot see or hit. not having TLOS you can mitigate so much shooting, so much more than now.

          • ZeeLobby

So if Orks can now make it there without being shot at, how is that not imbalanced for Eldar?

          • Walter Vining

that’s where being a good general comes in. you cannot achieve true balance in games, stop trying to.

          • ZeeLobby

Ah, so you’re part of team wibbling’s “it’s never the games fault, it’s only your fault”. They might as well not even release points for 40K. Obviously people loved it for AoS. I mean why have them if they don’t mean anything anyway right?

(You do realize that there’s a middle ground between completely unbalanced and true balance right? And that I wasn’t asking for either? Just stating that imbalances exist, and they should try to be mitigated)

          • Walter Vining

no im part of team the game is fine as is really. I see nothing wrong with it, the three balances to the game are there already just are either under utilized (terrain) or twisted to a point where people have to have a 40 page FAQ for it to sate their need to win.
the middle ground is already there. people just don’t want to use it at all. and as such I can see your opinion, you wont agree with this at all, so I shall say adieu at this point. Your discourse is never pleasing to read.

          • ZeeLobby

Eh. There’s no real discourse with someone who thinks the current game is fine as is. Or that a simple fix would solve all of it’s problems. Somehow use of terrain would make the game balanced is just a statement of oversimplification that can’t really be discussed.

In the end I’m glad that most of the community, and GW themselves, see that more is necessary than that. So I’m sure I’ll be happier with 8th. They’ve already done a great job at introducing balance via the General Handbooks in AoS, and I see them doing the same in 40K. So pluses all around for them.

          • Damistar

I am certain Eldar can not outshout the Orks 🙂

          • ZeeLobby

            Haha. If only :D.

    • 6Cobra

Bringing back some of the 2nd Ed shooting rules like to-hit modifiers would be a step in the right direction. 2nd Ed close combat worked great for tiny numbers of models (like Necromunda) but were a convoluted nightmare for mass combat of large armies. Definitely hope that doesnt come back.

    • ThorOdinson

Of course it looks like 2nd edition rules. 2nd edition rules are pretty much Necromunda rules, and they’re using Necromunda rules for this game. I wouldn’t take this as a sign of anything other than they’re bringing back Necromunda and keeping the rules.

    • Lewismauler

I think you’re better off wondering based on what GW told us their 8th edition ideas were on their warhammer community blog post.

    • This is a completely different system from 8th, they’re really stressing that

  • orionburn

Holy crap that’s an awesome set-up with all those combined.

  • Dan

No kidding playing GS Cult in Necromunda is a dream I’ve had for 20+ years.

  • cudgel

They really know how to milk the whale’s, lol.
“Buy 20 sets to make this awesome thing!”
What happened to making it yourself yo ?

    • I’m surprised GW isn’t offering us one of those bundle deals…no savings, its just to rescue us from having to click buy 20 times.

      • cudgel

You can get sprains that way.

    • Hawt Dawg

      Time?

    • It seems more like a reference to earlier vertical tables GW has done for necro

      • cudgel

        One doesn’t preclude the other.

        • I dunno, I don’t think FW tables are really meant to be a “hey you should do this at home” as much as “look what you could do if you were mad

          • cudgel

Thats fair, I do dose everything in cynicism.

  • I don’t understand the point costs. 50 for an Initiate, 10 for a heavy?

    • Lewismauler

Me neither lol but I never played nevermind a either so maybe that’s why I don’t get it

    • Decaramas

You can only have 1-3 specialists in your kill team and a heavy is a specialist, so while you could use them to buy cheap troops, you wouldnt have any big guns, which cost alot.

    • mrpage

The heavy doesn’t come with a gun, the points for him shoot up when you buy his Heavy Weapon.

    • Severius_Tolluck

Because the heavy weapons are priced at a premium, off sets cost.

  • Xodis

Would love to build that terrain, but I’m not sure my wife would be OK with a second mortgage.

Either way I’m really excited about this game so I hope its done right.

  • Nick Silver

    Can you get inquisitor warbands?

    • Valegorn

I would imagine so, I think they’re doing almost every race, and Inquisitor warbands operate in small squads, they would fit almost perfectly into this game system, especially since this isn’t just gangs anymore (like it was in Necromunda) but 40k.

Man, I am pretty set on playing some Genestealer Cults, but you got me wanting to play Inquisition too. That’s one beautiful thing about this game, you don’t have to drop hundreds of dollars on a new army.

      • I bought DW: overkill but I won’t hand the budget for expanding my GS cult any time soon. With this I’m ready to play!

  • Valegorn

Yeah, The more I see of this game the more I want to play it exclusively. It looks like it has everything from awesome from the old Necromunda rules (more rules leaked today), Loot, persistent injuries, Ammo, I just hope that there will be XP and a level up system (just like in Necromunda).

I love the old gangs of Necromunda, but I remember wishing I could include everything from my 40K collection. Looks like that wish is finally coming true. Thank you GW for this.
