40K 8th: The Ultima Founding

Roboute Guilliman and his Primaris Space Marines are here to reinforce their Brother Space Marine Chapters with the Ultima Founding!

Games Workshop is back with more background and lore for the upcoming 8th edition of Warhammer 40,000. This are looking pretty rough for a lot of the Galaxy. A Giant Warp-scar has split the Galaxy in half. Many of the chapters have been devastated but are still fighting tooth and bolter-shell to hang on.

Enter the returned Primarch Roboute Guilliman and with him, a glimmer of hope in the form of the new Primaris Space Marines. That is the current state of things in a nutshell for the Imperium. But where did these new Super Super-Humans come from and what are Guilliman’s plan for them? That’s what we’re here to find out:

via Warhammer Community

“It is not just as reinforcements to existing Chapters though. Guilliman has also ordered the creation of a host of new Chapters, the Ultima Founding, composed entirely of Primaris Space Marines. The warriors of these new Chapters were created entirely using the new processes discovered by Belisarius Cawl and established with all the necessary weapons, armour and equipment that they’ll need to conduct their defence of the Imperium.

These Chapter’s still trace their genetic lineage back to the gene-seed of the First Founding, and scions of all nine loyalists Legions emerged from the vaults beneath the red planet. They benefit from three additional organs and larger size, but it still remains to be seen if Cawl was able to successfully stabilise any of the known genetic deviations or impart any additional resistance to the effects of Chaos.”

That’s right folks – it’s a brand new founding which means NEW chapters of Space Marine. These new chapters are entirely composed of Primaris Space Marines as well. Given new home worlds to defend the Imperium from the threats in the Great Rift now is your chance to create your OWN Ultima Founding Chapter:

It doesn’t stop there either – you can even create your personal chapter if you are feeling so inclined. And Games Workshop has a new way for you to do just that:

Download the Heraldry Sheet HERE

I like some of the new color schemes and while I’ve never felt the urge to create my own chapter I know some folks get really into that – so have fun with the new possibilities!

Are you going to go with an “OG” Chapter or are you going to create your own?

  • Charles Rink

I predict that eventually all Space Marine models will be this size. The old models will slowly get pushed out.

    • Yea, I guess even the most refusing people will accept and see that now. Although… no, they won’t.

      • Nick Cathers

Honestly, sounds like a notch for my going theory that “whatever” will go wrong and the primaris will seperate from the OG. Arbitrary distinction sounds way more like the GDubs way than modernizing model lines does, overtly or aparently via fluff as yall keep speculating.

        • What’s OG?

          • Nick Cathers

Just a dumb phrase, I ment the current normi-marines.
            “Original Gangsters”

          • Minimarines then. I hope for a rebellion too. Although I don’t want a Horus Heresy 2.0 – or… Johnson Heresy or whatever they come up with. Probably a new Chaos God or something.

          • Dan Wilson

Those who wish to rebirth the emperor as the star child and those who wish to preserve him as he is.

          • “Preserve” is an interesting choice of word here indeed. 😀

          • euansmith

            Like pickled 😀

          • Nick Cathers

Honestly, with the way they’ve been writing so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if “the whole Indomitus crusade disapeared into the warp with all the Cawl stuff” to get them in on whatever plot point that’s been building to.

          • Yea, well, it would at least be up to par with the other writing as of late.

          • dcgamers

            Malice…

          • AircoolUK

That’s what I thought you meant… worked for me 😉

          • euansmith

Bustin’ it down, Terran-style! First Foundin’ fo’ life!

        • Boondox

And then you throw a little retcon in there and…

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

        reasons to play 30K…

        • Carey_Mahoney

          Space Marines?

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

            absence of Primaris

    • Keith Wilson

ive been saying that since they got released and many people refuse to accept it …. btw it hhas happened before ….. those of us that played rogue trader will remember.

      • Charles Rink

Agree. My nexy prediction: NOOOoooo! The Ultima gene has become a virus and infected ALL the space marines and made them primaris marines!!! SHOCK!!!

        • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

          don’t give them ideas.

    • Boondox

My RTB01 Beakies are always going to rock the table no matter how many Primaris knuckle draggers are there. “We managed to do it with three less organs, and inferior tech so suck it up buttercup.”

  • Huntard

“They benefit from three additional organs and larger size”

More organs means more human! http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/514a7fb0a14c348e723675d2be472a1c8d6852d90f2aa47a4387bdf202b810eb.jpg

    • euansmith

“Check out me codpiece, chuck; I’m rocking three new organs!”

    • Frank Krifka

“We’ve added three new organs. The first among them? The squeeddillyspooch “

  • RAKSHA

Yup as I said before old models will be gone..what will happen to space wolves and thunder wolves?..I’m not sure I like this 8th any more..

    • OrbitalHammer

Well, if was a betting man, i’d tell you to get ready for the new range of space wolves wolf horsies, the size of land raiders

    • Brad Rowan

The old models will still be viable they will be cheaper in points and have different weapon loadouts. GW disclosed this when they first showcased the new marines

      • RAKSHA

yes they did but this is just to calm people rage when they will find out old models are gone soon..they will push primaris marines so hard now to blind us all ..there will be no more old models relesed so no point for me to finish my space wolves…will need to look in the future ..start new chapter or push my little chaos army maybe..

        • Brad Rowan

I can see them at some point phasing out the old marines, the issue with that is it would go against the established lore that they are creating so if that does happen it will be around 10th Ed.plus t

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

        hahahahahaha

        the things they say…

        • euansmith

I actually quite like that the Marines are no long the Apex Predators of the Imperium. I like things that are a bit threadbare and pre-loved. I think it adds a level of pathos to their fluff; like the Thunder Warriors.

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

I can see that. I always thought they were tragi-comic figures, having sacrificed their humanity to protect humanity. Now they have sacrificed it to be second best protectors of humanity.

          • euansmith

“Sarge, are we the Meat Shield now?”

“There’s no shame in that, brother. Now spread out and bubble wrap those Primaris Marines.”

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

            sad but true

  • RAKSHA

I don’t think is any sense to buy old models any more too..waste of money and time painting them lol…maybe I will start new space wolves chapter Slayers of the old Ways…

    • euansmith

“We, Black Templars, pledge our blades to this new crusade.”

“Sorry, mate, you’ve got to be this tall to ride our ride.”

    • David Leimbach

My marines will end up in the last place I’d expected to send them with the 8th edition arriving: packed away with my 2nd-3rd edition orks.

      • RAKSHA

        my space wolves too

  • OrbitalHammer

confirmed the space wolves are gonna be ok!

  • Aura1

Everyone who said Primaris are the same size in the fluff and it’s just a marketing exercise please form an orderly queue to have your cynicism-reminder tattoo lazered into your skin…

  • euansmith

I was hoping that Heraldry Generator was going to be like the old web app where you could colour it in on-line.

Also, it is nice to see that the Crimson Fists (the best Chapter) will finally get to put the losses of Rynn’s World behind them.

    • You’re not easy to satisfy, eh? Don’t you have other things to do? Like for example selling your organs to buy some Primaris?

      😀

      • Boondox

Thats why we have two kidneys right?

    • AircoolUK

Already on it… I’ve got three Imperial Knights under construction to back up my Crimson dudes. 30 years of pain, now it’s time for payback!

      • euansmith

Imperial Knights? Don’t you mean Primaris Pattern Dreadnoughts?

        • AircoolUK

Why not eh? They’re getting painted in Crismson Fists colours, along with a big Crimson Fists (with a twist) icon, so yeah…

    • Crevab

Yeah, any time we’ve read a story about a chapter nearing annihilation or losing access to a particular piece of gear; it was all simply a case of someone forgetting to press the “Replenish Forces” button on Mars.

      • Boondox

BA managed to do it twice before without Mars. I guess everyone else are just wimps…

      • euansmith

“Your service is important to us, please hold (until relieved); you are currently number [REDACTED] in our Construction Queue.”

  • highwind

the new cash cow needs fluff?

    • Yea, so some players will choke it without moaning. And the others will get convinced by new uber-rules for them.

  • Dan Wilson

This comments section could be filled with non constructive whining, or a hot bed of creativity over new chapter ideas… But I guess this is the internet…

    • AircoolUK

Everyone will be keeping their ideas secret. After all, you don’t want to come up with a cool Chapter name (ie, one that doesn’t have the words Blood/Death/Doom/Shadow etc… followed by the name of an animal or supernatural being) just for someone to steal it (like Lars Oilrig did with Metallica).

      • euansmith

Are you saying that “Doom Hawks” isn’t a good name? How about, “Blood Oni” or “Shadow Dolphins”? 😉

Actually, “Doom Hawks” is pretty cool in an Old Skool 40k manner.

  • AircoolUK

So what are the new Chapters?

    • Simply new successors. There was an image floating around somewhere with some of them shown, just can’t find it anymore. Basically differently coloured Primaris just like on the picture about 1st founding and successors above.

      • AircoolUK

Ah right… I thought there was a bit of detail on them.

    • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

      the Noun-Verbers, the Verb-in-Past-Tensers, the Animals-of-Some-place, the Birds-of-Some-Place and The-Emperor’s-Something.

  • DerSpeigel

Vote with your wallet and don’t buy them GW only gets away w this if we let them

    • So they will get away with this with a huge profit.

      • Maitre Lord Ironfist

As long as other stuff gets love i am fine with it. making Money big time there gives (hopefully) recources to the realisation of other stuff.

I glance at plastic sisters x) Or in general non Marines Stuff.

And yes, i would buy a pack of specific GreyKnight Primaris Marines x)

      • jack boland

yep, and we will be validating lazy story telling, poor rules crafting, and terrible modelling. Oh well, you guys can’t complain when in a few years time 40k is anime.

        • So instead of not buying any 40k stuff from now on, we will do that in a few years. I’m ok with that. GW turned 180°, I still hope the bad fluff-writing of late will too.

          • jack boland

or you are just propagating moving our hobby away from its roots and the storyline people love? Of course it wont. This is the direction of 40k for the time being. Anime. Less grim dark. Child like stories. its moved on and isn’t meant for the generation that started it.

          • When I was a kid, I liked 40k (and still do) exactly because it was grimdark.

          • jack boland

hmmm i would disagree completely. The move is 100% towards less grim dark and more anime without a doubt

          • How is that a “disagreement” with what I said? I nowhere said that the move isn’t like that. I said that’s not what I liked to have as a kid and neither now.

          • jack boland

because you said “When I was a kid, I liked 40k (and still do) exactly because it was grimdark.”. It is no longer grim dark.

          • You misunderstand. I did like and still do – the grimdark parts of it. With the recent fluff, I basically just like the models I have collected over the last 22 years.

          • jack boland

cool, yeh makes sense. The recent story is absolutely terrible.

    • AircoolUK

Never gonna happen. P-Marines are going to sell.

      • Like hot cakes.

        • AircoolUK

Sell them with free hot cakes and cheezy poofs then even the grognards will be buying them.

      • DerSpeigel

I’m sure they will…sighs in resignation

    • thereturnofsuppuppers

but the new dreadnought looks really pretty.

      • DerSpeigel

        It realy doesn’t

        • thereturnofsuppuppers

Really reminds me of titan fall.

          • DerSpeigel

It’s not a bad mech, it’s just not 40k it’s like a Lucius pattern. In Battletech it would be cool

          • Maitre Lord Ironfist

well they are here, and they will stay. Just deal with it.

Played today and ppl want to buy them. The reaction is over the top.

          • jack boland

or just play heresy! I know 40k is dead to me.

          • Maitre Lord Ironfist

I do not like to play nearly only Space Marines is all flavours. Love the Books and Story, do not like the Game x) But great Models though. These Primarchs are very very nice.

          • jack boland

yeh heresy is life. But to be honest, in 30k playing marines is actually interesting.

          • Maitre Lord Ironfist

i watched some BAttlereports. But it is just me, who does not like to play SM outside of Grey Knights 🙂 The Men vs Monster narrative is more in my Favour. Tahts maybe why i like Inquisition and Sisters.

          • jack boland

sure, that is fair. That is something that also exists in 30k, but is certainly less prevalent.

          • thereturnofsuppuppers

Surely anything GW wants to make is 40k.

          • jack boland

Obviously. His point is that GW has sepnt 20+ years establishing a universe. This goes completely against that established look and lore. Obviously he wasn’t referring their right to their IP.

          • thereturnofsuppuppers

It has the chamber to house the dead/nearly dead marine

            Is bulky and squat.

Lots of aquilas, and very impractical.

Looks like a 40k armoured walker to me.

          • jack boland

i mean thats telling half a truth.

          • thereturnofsuppuppers

            Whats the other half?

          • DerSpeigel

It’s 40k because they made it and said it was but for me the design aesthetic isn’t there.

      • AircoolUK

I still think it would be great with the Forge World Grot Sponsons glued to the shoulders. Throw in a few more Orky things and you’ve got a mini-morkanaut.

        • euansmith

An Ork face peering out of the hole where the sarcophagus goes and it will look the proper business.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

Castroferrum body inside another Castroferrum body on Contemptor legs.

        • euansmith

Maybe, rather than having a reducing Stat Line based on wounds, the Imperium could have a Knight Titan that ejects a Dreadknight, that ejects a Dreadnought, that elects a Terminator, that ejects a Marine.

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

            like Pink horrors. Cool!

      • jack boland

        nah its terrible.

    • Evil Otto

What are they “getting away with,” exactly?

    • jack boland

exactly. I wont be buying a single thing.

  • SilentPony

So do the flaws of the geneseeds still exist? Are we going to get Primaris Death Company? Primaris Wulfen?! What ’bout them Primaris Salamanders? They still turn onyx with red eyes?
Do Primaris Blood Ravens develop psychic powers at a faster rate?
Can a Primaris White Scar even fit on a bike? And how, dare I ask, can a Primaris Marine being even taller than a normal Marine be MOAR sneaky than a normal Raven Guard?

    • Ben Martin

It’s unconfirmed, but incredibly likely that they will either keep the faults or have new ones. They were made by Cawl, and kept in storage for ages until Guilliman showed up again so I doubt Cawl actually knows too much about how they react. They’re meant to have reduced geneseed effects and better resistance to chaos, but for all Cawl knows they could be worse than normal marines

    • euansmith

Do Primaris Blood Ravens still nick anything that isn’t nailed down?

      • Drpx

“Bet that chap can carry a lot…”

        • Boondox

See that Marine over there? He’s a Blood Raven and if he asks for anything you give him whatever he wants. Because if you don’t, he’s gonna come back at night and take whatever we’ve got…

  • cudgel

I never understood why people don’t always make their own chapters. I was quite surprised when I found out that was not the case.

    • Because they like existing fluff and colours over making up their own I guess. For me, painting yellow couldn’t get any better by making my own chapter. So Fists all the way.

    • Drpx

I made my own, but I know most people would rather just be given something cool that they can identify with. It’s why creative artists have a job after all.

  • BrassWitch

Oh man, I really wish they’d come up with a coloring thingie for good’ole minimarines.

    • Ben Martin

There is nothing stopping you from using these for normal marines

      • BrassWitch

It’s just not the same, man.

  • bfmusashi

All hail the return of coloring pages!

    • euansmith

Going over the lines is heresy!

      • palaeomerus

Yes but it’s Orwell day so Heresy is Orthodoxy

  • Ronin

I’m ok with Space marines getting these reinforcements, but I want to know how Guilliman plans to retcon the organizational mandates of the codex astartes. Are will still going to see 100 man companies and 1000 man chapters? Are these primaris marines going to be auxiliaries similar to the 1st company veterans?

    • David Leimbach

Yah, except that a 1000 man chapter of these guys could wipe out 10 regular 1000 man chapters of minimarines.

    • ja25s

Well considering RG wrote the codex pretty sure he’s allowed to edit it or add in foot notes.

      • Crevab

And theres no one really around to disagree

      • jack boland

does that make sense though? in his time line, he literally just wrote the codex to prevent another horus heresy. Then the next thing he does is scrap the whole thing? its just lazy.

    • jack boland

haha yeh. Theres no good answer to this because GW no longer cares.

  • Evil Otto

Somebody (not me, I hate painting yellow) Angry Primaris Marines! Always extra angry, all the time!

    http://pre12.deviantart.net/eae0/th/pre/f/2012/250/d/f/angry_marines__by_halcoon_145-d5durlx.jpg

  • Boondox

The Chapter of loud noise makers? WTH?

  • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

Can’t decide between Scars (Rampagers), Hands, or Fists (Excoriators).

  • jack boland

nothing like being fluff-raped in the morning

  • This Dave

Just waiting now for the roll out of the Chaosified Primarius Marines, probably around this time next year.
