Goatboy’s 40k Army List – My New Multi-Month Army

5 Minute Read
Jan 7 2011
Warhammer 40K

I know I still have my Dark Eldar build to work on but I figured I need another army to appease my Chaos desires. Instead of just adding onto the Goats I’ve decided to do something completely new. You wont believe what I’m planning…

The plan is for this army to be just a single build as I don’t feel like having more Chaos guys to add to my growing collection – whether goatheaded or greenstuffed.

The Idea
I’ve been reading the Horus Heresy books and have really taken a liking to the thought of building a Heresy based army. We already have the Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus here in town so I knew that was out of the picture. We obviously have the Death Guard army from Big Red as well as a bunch of others too. I even painted a World Eaters army earlier this month so that was out of the question also. This left me with a few choices and I decided to go with the Heresy-Era Word Bearers. I want to go with an army that is in between change so the thought is the senior members are the wine red color while the regular grunts are still the grey that is common with the Legion. The codex I decided to use was the Space Wolves as I felt it gave me the most options in terms of creating cool counts-as options.

The Core
Right now I have 4 units that will be a lock for the army. I like the look and design thoughts and really just want to build an army around these 4 units (really just two – but it is 4 units total).

FA: Swiftclaws X 5, Power Weapon
FA: Swiftclaws X 5, Power Weapon

There is also a Wolf Guard add on for each part with the following build out.

WG – Bike, Power Fist, Combi-Melta

Point cost total is 711pts. That is a big chunk of an army but I think it will look neat as I have a horse riding theme in the army. Plus it is a pretty mean unit and having both means I got two fists to bring to the Gun Show.

How to Expand?
Now here is where I have a dilemma – what should I add to this. Obviously I need some troops and long range fire power. I don’t really want to have another Long Fangs army as I obviously have a Goat Headed one – so the thought it to go towards Razorbacks as a way to get some much needed long range firepower. Of course the added benefits is this army is easy to reserve and have come on the table effective.

So lets look at some troop options that I can use.

Troops: Grey Hunters X 5, Meltagun, Razorback, (Special Gun) – 155pts
Troops: Grey Hunters X 5, Plasma Gun, Plasma Pistol, Razorback, Lascannon/TWL Plasma Gun – 175pts
Troops: Grey Hunters X 9, Meltagun, Rhino – 175pts

I know I could use Blood Claws but feel I don’t want to add anymore Wolf Priests to the army. Thus the lack of them for this current build thought. I could run a Plasma squad and two Meltagun Razorbacks. That would give me some options and some long ranged firepower. I’ve left room for Wolf Guard in the units so that might come in with the most common build out being.

Wolf Guard, Powerfist, Combi-Weapon – 43pts.

I plan on having the Grey Hunters be a grey color with the Wolf guard going with the common red/wine color that is common for the changed Word Bearers. This way I get a both sides of the coin type of look in the army.

So the question is how many troops do you think I need? If I run 4 squads of them I basically start to set up a parking lot bristling with anti tank fire power. My bikes move forward and interact with the enemy as my long ranged fire power tries to pop tanks and anything else. If something gets close I come out, load out the plasma, and turn whatever is in front of me into a gooey pile of plasma chunks.

Now we still have points left so the other thoughts would be to either beef up the Swift Claw squads or go into some other utility direction with Wolf Scouts. I had a thought for the Wolf Scouts to be Shadow Daemons that they Word Bearers summon. That could be interesting and a worth wile addition to the army too. I also thought about a crazy Wolf Lord modeled as a Daemon Prince that runs around causing problems. Lets look at some options.

Wolf Scouts X 5, Mark of the Wolfen (Touch of Chaos), Meltagun – 100pts
Wolf Guard attachment – Powerfist, Combi-Melta – 43pts
Wolf Guard Battle Leader, Bike, Powerfist, Storm Shield – 160pts
Wolf Guard Battle Leader, Bike, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield – 165pts
Wolf Lord, Thunder Wolf, Saga of the Bear, Powerfist, Storm Shield, Runic Armor, Fenris Wolves X 2 – 275pts

There are a lot of crazy options in here and a lot of things to think about. There are some neat ways to do some cool modeling as well as other options to increase the armies viability. This army is meant to be my Tournament army for the coming year so the thought is to make this an effective army. It has some odd choices as well as an overall lack of true static ranged fire power. I don’t want to add in Long Fangs as every Space Wolves or Counts as Space Wolves armies runs them. I guess I could have them shooting scrolls or books or something. Either way I don’t want them. So if you got some cool ideas or some other thoughts please comment away. If you want you can shoot me an email.

The Minis
Here are the test minis I did to see if I wanted to go into this direction. I really like how they came out and think the army will look pretty damned neat on the table top. Now will it play alright? Who the heck knows. At least it isn’t a 15 Long Fang + Logan monstrosity you will see when facing a Space Wolves list.
