Escalation is just around the corner and here’s the latest scuttlebutt doing the rounds.  Just what is the game going to be like after this weekend?

A gamer with the Escalation book in hand writes:

Escalation Basics

– Escalation is for “Standard” Warhammer 40,000
– It is not described as an “Expansion” (such as Planetstrike, Cities
of Death, Apocalypse)
– The newly added single FOC “Lord of War” choice is optional (like Allies & Fortifications)

“Lord of War” Rules:

If a Lord of War is fielded, the opposing player receives a +1 to Seize the Initiative and for each 3 Hull Points or Wounds inflicted on a Lord of War they gain +1 mission victory points.
Destroyer weapons, Hellstorm templates and all other Apocalypse based rules are identical carryovers from the Apocalypse book, but now exist in the standard 40K ruleset.

Escalation Datasheets
IG: Baneblade (all varieties)
Ork: Stompa (all varieties)
Chaos: Lord of Skulls
Astartes: Thunderhawk
Tyranid: Harridan
Tau: Tigershark
Eldar/Dark Eldar: Revenant
Necrons: Tessseract Vault, Transcendant C’Tan, Obelisk
So this looks like a “halfway house” Apocalypse-light, that is an attempt to not only expand the game but push sales of those oh so pricey giant plastic kits.  I can’t say I’m surprised at the goal, but I am surprised at the timing.  Just as 6th ushered in the era of flyers, I would have assumed 7th would be the proper timing for this type of thing.  Odd to see GW bumrush into this halfway into the edition.
So what’s your take on the game’s newest growth?
