Outpost Siberia Promises Chilling Co-op Fun

In Siberia, the cold can kill you in minutes. In Outpost Siberia, you might not even last long enough to freeze to death.

Outpost Siberia is a card game about surviving the “Storm of the Century” in a remote Siberian Outpost (as you might have gathered from the name). But it doesn’t end there. Surviving the worst storm in an isolated outpost is easy compared to surviving whatever is howling and prowling in the icy darkness. It’s up to you and your friends to band together to try and endure both the storm and the terrors.

So really, it sounds like this is a game all about getting horribly murdered in the frozen tundra. And I’m okay with that. It’s a cooperative card game–which is exciting to hear. I love cooperative games of any kind. Something about banding together against the merciless, unthinking, unfeeling, uncaring attack of the board/deck/whatever just brings people together. And it makes it more okay for things to feel unfair.

We’ve all had that turn in Pandemic–the game is going surprisingly well. Everything’s been contained and you’re on track to winning, but then an outbreak happens, and then another. And then nobody can get what they need and you raise your fist to the sky in defiance, but to no avail. Makes it even better when you manage to eke out that last turn victory. Games like that feel legendary, and this game seems like it’s got plenty to offer in terms of that “put upon by the world and more” genre.

Outpost Siberia – $19.99 (August 2017)

Welcome to Outpost 1, the first science observatory located in the isolated frozen tundra of Siberia! You and your team have been investigating anomalous activities in the region. Recently, things have shifted for the worse. The coming storm is said to be the “storm of the century.” It may last a month or more. Strange howls and buzzing fill the long nights, and yesterday, a crew member went AWOL…or worse. The call for evacuation was made, but it came too late. The long winter storm has set in. There’s no hope of getting help until it clears. Now your crew’s only hope is to use what little resources you have to survive the long winter cold (and whatever’s out there in it). Use your rations wisely, and you may see the sun again.

Outpost: Siberia is a fully cooperative, survival game designed by Jon Gilmour, co-designer of Dead of Winter, and Daryl Andrews that plays with a single deck of cards. Using an inventive dual-facing system, a single card in Outpost can be anything from life-saving supplies to cataclysmic catastrophes. By enduring relentless weather and defeating untamable beasts, players are rewarded with the much-needed tools and food to continually resupply their resources.

Outpost: Siberia keeps the tension high, as players will need to collect their wits and ration their supplies in order to make it through the perpetual perils that lie ahead!

Stay safe, and remember to keep a hot needle handy.
