Goatboy’s 40k Thoughts: Top 10 Index Units

Goatboy here again and today’s bit of 40k nuttiness for the Thanksgiving week is to look at the top 10 choices still left over in the index books.

I am of the opinion that the indexes should either get an updated list with correct points/choices for the upcoming match season or just going away as a whole.  It is very frustrating to see some options you would usually like for an army (mounted HQ choices) not available because GW doesn’t make an actual kit.  This leaves us with having to carry around a book that has rules and points elsewhere.  But enough of that – let’s look at the top 10 unit choices still left over from the index.

10. The Entire Sisters Codex

This is one of those armies that have very good rules (Acts of Faith are Imperial Ynarri nonsense and how many times have the death-obsessed Space Elves been nerfed?) and an excellent set of point values.  I think if this army had plastic models from GW – then it would most likely be heavily used in this new limited CP regeneration metagame.  I painted a big army of these, and I know that player is currently crushing things with his Sisters backed up by some of my Blood Angel models and a Castellan Knight.  I think the Beta Codex will be powerful, fluffy, and bring some powerful 3+ save ladies shooting blessed bolters into those pesky xenos jerks.

9. The leftover Assassins that need to have a proper book

Mix these guys in with some of these weird mini releases like Black Stone and the Rogue Trader boxed set.  Throw in the Inquisition and Sisters of Silence and give us the Agents of the Imperium book we need.  The Culexus and the Eversor are both powerful Assassins and hopefully will survive the upcoming Chapter Approved.  I still have dreams of running a ton of Eversors into the gaping maw of the enemy.

8. Space Marine HQs on Bikes of all flavors

These guys need to get added back in as every Marine player has a few on a biker base.  I think they could just throw in a slightly updated biker sprue, mix in a character sprue, and call it a day for every Marine based player.  These models need to come back as while they are not nearly as powerful as the slam captains of all flavors – they could be interesting in the new lack of being able to jump over the enemy line.

He comes, he goes… (also cocaine)

7. Chaos Marine characters on bikes are also really neat.

I know my buddy Kenny had a very fast assault based army using 3 Chaos Lords on bikes and I always had fun building and playing them in my random Chaos Space Marine lists.  This is a no-brainer release that could be fun to play with.  Give us a few sprues, some litanies to the Chaos gods, and whammo we get a pretty neat release.

6. The GSC are still a thing…

…even though only a few people are doing good with them (cough… cough… Nick Rose…).

I want to see a new book as I have painted a rather large force of them and want to see the light at the end of that tunnel at some point.  Plus that gunslinger model looks rad, and it would be great to finally see some rules for them.  Right now it is Codex Aberrant/Stealers so will see if the new book changes how they play.

5. Big Mek on a Bike with a KFF

The new Ork codex was missing a lot of characters on bikes and the first initial important one you will probably see if the Big Mek on a Bike with a KFF.  This is one of those crucial units you see riding behind some Battle Wagons or keeping your Lootas safe behind waves of Grots.  The points are still pretty decent and will inevitably show up in a lot of lists in the coming months as we wait for GW to decide on the Indexes.

4. Warboss on a bike

I think every Ork player has a Warboss on a bike.  It was one of the most common things you saw from the Indexes as well as used heavily in all interactions of the Ork armies.  I know they want the Ork player to use the Wartrike – but if you are giving us an amazing Power Klaw and can’t put it on a cruise missile of a character then what do you want us to be excited about GW?

3. Nob Bikers

The final Ork thing you might see is the lowly weapon choice left over from the index for the Nob Biker unit.  The Kustom shoota doesn’t show up in the current codex as an option available for the Nobz.  It feels odd as its always on the Ork boy sprue as a double stacked shoota you can throw on your Boss Nob or two.  For 2 points you get a four shot gun and when you throw it on a Biker with say a Big Choppa – you get a ten shot beat stick that can put a hurting on anyone they are near.  Oh, and they are a Speed Freak too.  It is just weird not to see it available to Nobs as they have the Kombi options (except Bikers per their rule).  I am messing with a unit of 9 with Kustom Shootas to have a 90 shot unit that will probably only cause 20 hits.

2. The Autarch with a ton of Liefield pouches, weapons, and a bad attitude.

You think your Slam Captain can do it all – throw a Reaper Launcher, give them a Banshee mask, throw in a Laser Lance, and then put them on a bike and you got a murder machine designed to turn off overwatch, kill enemies as needed, and just be a complete pain in the butt when they get close to the enemy.  They really should just set up how many things they can carry and have on them.

Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful. Hate me because my rules are off the hook.

1. YNARRI ARSEHOLES.

The guys that activate the best overall army in the game are still the best things in the index.  These guys have survived three nerfs?  Or is it four nerfs?  It gets hard to remember when these guys have still survived through all the “fixing” and again come out on top.  I don’t know what else to do with them beyond just changing Soul Burst to be something like Freebootas where if they kill something they get an aura like effect.

Is there anything I missed?  I am sure I missed some hot piece of awesome left in these indexes. If you’ve found something else cool post it in the comments!

Until next time – let’s hope everyone’s Thanksgiving is awesome, the GSC book finally comes out, and we get a new Abbie model for once.  That top knot needs some work.
