Star Wars: Destiny is getting a new expansion and it’s adding a whole new way to win the game with the power of plot!

For a lot of CCGs, when a new expansion comes out, they might introduce a couple new mechanics or abilities. Or they might just play it safe an introduce basically the same stuff as a previous set but with  slight tweaks to names/art/stats. But with the new expansion for Star Wars: Destiny, Covert Missions is literally adding new ways to win the game.

The galaxy can change in a single instant. The destruction of Alderaan announced to the galaxy that the dreaded Death Star was fully operational and that the Empire was in complete control. In the same way, the Rebels’ swift destruction of this terrible weapon brought a spark of hope to the disenfranchised and signaled a changing tide. These covert missions are undertaken by some of the most iconic characters in the galaxy and can change the balance of the Force.

Covert Missions expands on the themes of the Convergence Block by continuing to place an emphasis on sub-types, downgrades, and plots! In this set, look for a new keyword, iconic characters, and two new plots that provide an alternate victory condition.

The Power of Plot

Plots are a new type of card that has been created for this expansion and they offer alternate win conditions. They typically have some type of alternate cost mechanic that you have to meet in order to trigger the win conditions. In the preview from FFG, we got a look at two of the new win conditions:

Depending on which side you’re fighting on, you’re either going to attempt to destroy or contstruct the Death Star. These cards present alternate winning conditions if you can simply pay the cost to complete them. They don’t have to be completed all at once – but they are basically ticking time bombs sitting on the table. With these out, players will have to work fast to either attack your characters to prevent them from completing these plots or suffer the consequences.

On top of that, there are other cards that lean into this thematically. For example, you can build your deck around characters that will lower the barriers to completing these objectives. Taking Director Krennic decreases the cost of the Death Star Plot by 1 and also allows you to chance one of your dice to the resource side.

On the Hero side, Luke Skywalker decreases the cost of the Death Star Plot by 1 and his new Piloting ability will come in very handy. Piloting is a new mechanic that allow you to activate this character and a vehicle at the same time. The character is then considered to be Piloting that vehicle.

“This not only provides action efficiency, but can be a trigger for other effects, such as Luke’s ability to increase the value of his piloted vehicle’s die by one. If Luke Skywalker’s piloted vehicle is his iconic X-Wing (Covert Missions, 66), you can even utilize its Power Action to turn its die to any side! Between Luke Skywalker and his X-Wing, over half your dice are showing damage, making them the perfect pair to take one fateful shot against the dreaded Death Star.”

And speaking of Pilots and their ships, why not say hello to one more character who is a famous bounty hunter with his own ship to boot:

Notice that the Slave I card grants Piloting to both Boba Fett and Jango Fett characters in your deck. Not too shabby.

Furthermore, this set also introduces more cards that will help you achieve your Plot goals. Cards like Trench Run help you dig up your copy of Trust Your Feelings so you can fire off that deadly salvo on the Death Star:

Covert Missions looks to really change up the game by introducing these two new plots and a whole cast of new character to play with. Will you take advantage of the new mechanics or are you going to try to win the old fasioned way – by eliminating the opposing team!

Covert Missions $2.99 (Per Booster Pack)
