The Classic Citadel Collectable Card Game is back with a whole new Digital Format. Check out Combat Cards!

30 years ago, Games Workshop released a Collectable Card Game called Combat Cards. Every miniature that was painted by the ‘Eavy Metal hobby team was featured in the initial 150 card set and could be used in a fast-paced, tactical card game. Now, Well Played Games and Flaregames have partnered up with Games Workshop to recreate the game for the digital era with a new version now available for iOS and Android devices. Say hello to Warhammer Combat Cards:

Gameplay Video

The concept is pretty simple. You get a deck of cards with various units represented. Each unit has different stats and slightly different abilities and costs different points. You’ll have a Warlord and various Bodyguard units as well. When you start up battle, you’ll be dealt your Warlord and a selection of Bodyguards. These units will be placed in your zone and then you’ll square off against your opponent.

When playing a campaign game, you’ll be facing off against pre-set decks. When you’re playing a non-campaign game, you’ll be facing off against player created decks – but all games will be vs AI.

During a battle, initiative will be determined and attacks will happen. On your turn, you can choose one of three types of attack: Melee, Ranged, or Psychic. These have different effects and you opponent can also attack back during this step depending on their respective loadouts. Before you finalize your attack option, your attack score will also be tabulated – as well as your opponents projected return damage. Sometimes is beneficial to pick a “weaker” attack option if your opponent can’t return fire.

As attacks are resolved, damage is dealt to the cards and their health pools drop. When a card’s health reaches 0, it’s destroyed and removed from play. It can no longer contribute damage to the fight! The first player to eliminate their opponent’s Warlord wins the match. Now, you do get bonuses for eliminating enemy bodyguards – but to claim ultimate victory, you need to survive and take out their Warlord. The rewards are basically more card packs you get to unlock after you complete daily objectives and win matches. 10 bodyguard kills earns you a pack of cards. Killing the Enemy Warlord earns you a Warlord pack, too.

You can use those cards to build your own decks and level-up existing cards by combining matching cards. That makes them better in the game overall, but they tend to cost more points to include in your decks, too.

Currently in the game there are 3 factions and  8 different sub-factions you can play as:

Overtime, you collection will grow and you can build new decks and discover new strategies to the game. It’s a phone game and a typical match isn’t super time consuming. That said, I can totally see folks getting sucked into the game play over the course of a day. If you’re looking for a fun time killer for your phone then check out Warhammer Combat Cards and earn some cards for your digital collection.
