D&D Beyond is the official D&D digital toolset, where you can find books, searchable monster entries, and now–a robust encounter builder. Check it out.

Recently announced from D&D Beyond, the long-awaited Encounter Builder is finally (nearly) here, sliding into open beta like a child running carefree down the Crocodile Mile, enjoying a world where the only thing they have to worry about is following questionable safety advice when surrounded by crocodiles.

But enough childhood nostalgia, let’s take a look at how your favorite RPG from 1974 is getting on with the newly updated Encounter Builder.

As you can see, there’s a lot of functionality built-in. It’s got built-in access to D&D Beyond’s library, so you can search through monster stat blocks, drop them into encounters, and figure out your XP budget and difficulty level. Subscribers will get unlimited numbers of encounters, but anyone with even a free account will be able to save up to eight different encounters all at once.

In addition to just dropping monsters, you can add descriptions and notes for your encounters, you’ll have a way to see what sort of monsters and player characters are involved in the encounters, as well as finding a way to share your encounters. So you can design encounters for all your friends and foes if you want.

Finally, and most relevant to DMs playing through the official D&D Encounters, folks who have the sourcebook through D&D Beyond will receive access to pre-generated encounters that correspond to the encounters in the book. So if you’re playing through Descent into Avernus, for instance, you’ll be able to pull up the pre-loaded encounters and start running through them once your party is ready. These last two features take a load off of Dungeon Masters, and it’s exciting to see a forum for community-created encounters.

Happy Adventuring!
