Games Workshop has a batch of Holiday Army boxes – but which box is the best of the bunch? Check out our top pick and why below.

Every year Games Workshop puts out some pretty amazing holiday bundle deals for starting (or adding to) an army. This year they offered a nice selection of both 40k and AoS boxes. But time is running out for holiday shopping. So which one is “the best” of all the boxes? Here are our top 3 and why.

Second-Runner Up – Nighthaunt: Court of the Craven King

Not only is this a great deal, it’s a pretty solid force to start with. The Centerpiece model is Kudross and he’s a bit of a beat-stick on the tabletop. The Hexwraiths are useful for reasons we’ll explain later. The Chainrasps are arguably the best battleline unit for Death in general and the Grimghast Reapers are also a very popular choice. The other two units might not be “meta” options but they can hit hard and you could build from there.

Recommended additions:

  • Black Coach
  • A unit of Hexwraiths
  • Dreadblade Harrows

By adding another unit of Hexraiths, a Black Coach and some Dreadblade Harrows, you can now take them as the Deathriders Battalion which is a very good option for the army. Plus the Dreadblade Harrows can teleport around and if you make one your general, you can bring a unit with you.

This box is a good start – but it needs some more to really make it better.

First Runner-up – Chaos Space Marines Vengeance Warband

The Chaos Space Marine holiday bundle is a pretty great box over-all compared to the rest of the 40k options. The reason we chose it over some of the others, however, is because it’s mostly new models. The only “old” kits are the Rhino and the Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor. However, the Rhino actually makes this box tick – specifically for those new move and fire Havocs. The Terminators and Lord make for quite a mean “brick” unit and are decent now. And if you make these Chaos Space Marines Red Corsairs, this whole box is actually useful.

Recommended Additions:

With these additions, you’ll get three full units of 10 Chaos Space Marines, plus all the extra goodies from the Start Collecting Box like the Master of Possession, the Venomcrawler, and Obliterators. The final addition is the Chaos Knight, which, of course is going to be really mean. Depending on how you want it to work, the box really does offer a really strong starting point.

The Best of the Holiday Bundles – Gloomspite Gitz Caveshroom Loonz

The Mangler Squig, the Squig Hoppers (which you should build as Boingrot Bounderz), the Loonboss, and Loonsmasha Fanatics are all really great for this army. The Trolls are also solid and look amazing. This is our favorite box of the holiday bundles and it’s best because all the units are useful and you are going to be able to use them in a Gloomspite Army.

  • Boingrot Bounderz
  • MOAR GROTS!!!!
  • Bad Moon Loonshrine

Again, this is a really solid start. You really just need to fill out the rest of the army. A second unit of Boingrot Bounderz will add some hitting power. The Bad Moon Loonshrine will help you pull off some dirty tricks. And at this point, you really just need more bodies on the tabletop. Grotz or Squigs – it’s kind of up to you. Just get a BUNCH of them and you’re set.

That is our list of the best holiday battleboxes. Which is your favorite and why?
