Well, that was fast! Fans of the beloved captain, rejoice – season one is not the end, you’re getting more episodes.

Back in September Sir Stewart made a few hints about the series going longer than a season in interviews; telling The Examiner “I am clearing the decks for that and then there is also the possibility of a second Picard series filming in March next year.” Variety is now confirming that the yet to air series has been picked up for a second season. Given the fan response, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

Showrunner Michael Chabon will be leaving after season one to work on an adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize winning novel ‘The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay’ for Showtime (yes, you read that right) – so the second round may have a bit of a different feel to it.

The first 10 episode season debuts on CBS All Access January 23rd. The series happens after Picard has stepped away from Starfleet and e’s still dealing with the events in Star Trek: Nemesis and (thanks to the alternate timeline created in 2009’s Star Trek) the destruction of Romulus. We’re in a much-changed Alpha Quadrant.

Jonathan Del Arco, Jonathan Frakes (William T. Riker), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Data), and Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) are all returning to Trek universe in this series along with Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard.
