With the new Pointy Aelves on the way (soon we hope), we started wondering what’s going to make them different than Cities of Sigmar. Turns out a LOT.

Aside from an aesthetic update, we’re pretty sure the Pointy Aelves are going to get a massive rework and re-release for the old High Elf range. We went back through the Cities of Sigmar book and compared the remnants of the High Elves to their final Army Book from Warhammer Fantasy. For starters, here are the remaining units in the Cities of Sigmar Battletome:

  • Anointed – aka Phoenix Guard Hero
  • Phoenix Guard
  • Frostheart Phoenix
  • Flamespyre Phoenix
  • Shadow Warriors*
  • Sisters of the Watch**

*Shadow Warriors are their own sub-faction now
**The Sisters of the Watch are now technically part of the Wanderers (aka Wood Elves)

That’s a pretty small subset of units formerly known as High Elves on that list. The old WFB High Elves had a pretty massive line of miniatures in plastic as well. As an example, here’s a look at their old quick reference roster:

Even if you skip over all the named characters and unit heroes, you can see quite a few stand out units that have gone missing:

  • White Lions
  • Chariots, both versions
  • Swordmasters
  • The Lothern Skycutter
  • Dragon Princes
  • Archers
  • Spearmen
  • Silver Helms
  • All the Dragons
  • All the Eagles
  • Bolt Throwers

The list goes on. Many of these units were quietly pulled from the GW webpage around the time of Cities of Sigmar. So where did they go? Some might be gone forever. Others might see a rebirth with the Pointy Alves.

Pour one out for the White Lions…

From that list above, we can start to guess what units are probably going to get redone in the new style for Age of Sigmar:

  • New Battleline Units (Swords/Spearmen and Archers)
  • New Cavalry Units (Dragon Princes/Silver Helms/Other)
  • Chariots or Other Chariot-like Unit
  • Elite Infantry (White Lions/Swordmasters)
  • A New Kit for a Dragon(s)
  • Bolt Throwers!!!

And that’s not even including all the different characters we might see, like Teclis or other Mages.

If these new Pointy Aelves (and we sincerely hope they keep the name) are going to be the new and re-imagined High Elves, we can’t wait to see what GW has instore. Many of the units from their previous incarnation were iconic to the franchise. Maybe not Space Marine iconic, but still pretty easily identified. I’m hoping that GW manages to thread that needle for these units being call-backs to their old selves but being completely new and updated at the same time.

At least we know they are going to be Pointy!

What do you think? What units would you like to see reborn or do you think GW is going to start completely over with the new Pointy Aelves?
