Age of Sigmar: Hero Focus – Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur

Here’s some thoughts on the Saurus Oldblood on Carnosaur and to get the most out of it on the battlefield.

Back in the days of yore, a great Saurus hero was spawned that led the Lizardmen to greatness called Kroq-Gar. Blessed by the old ones with powerful weapons and Grymloq, the largest and most ferocious of the carnosaurs, he was the last survivor of the temple-city Xhotl. Now, you can bring that godsborne lizardpower to your own games of Age of Sigmar with the mighty Oldblood on Carnosaur, one of the mighty heroes of the Seraphon.

Meet the Oldblood

The Oldblood has a solid line of stats for a mounted hero, living up to the legend of the old hero he represents. At full strength, he has a 10” move, which isn’t the fastest monster hero in the game but can get him into combat relatively quickly. Even better, once he’s killed a model, he can run and charge in the same turn, so once his rampage starts it’s hard to stop. He’s also relatively tough, as expected of a dino warrior, with 12 wounds and a 4+ save. Of course, his real threat comes from his arsenal of deadly attacks.

Using the Oldblood

First, before he even hits combat, he can fire a beam of searing energy from his Sunbolt gauntlet, giving him an 18” shooting attack with d6 shots that hits on a 3+, wounds on a 4+, and deals 1 damage with Rend 1. Of course, the Old Ones created the Lizardmen to fight the forces of chaos in the world that was, and that translates to the Seraphon, allowing him to wound Chaos Daemons on a 3+ with his gauntlet instead. Of course, his real power comes once he hits combat, and he can put his terrifying mount to bloody use. His primary weapon is his Sunstone Spear, giving him 3 attacks that hit and wound on a 3+, each which deal a staggering 3 wounds with a Rend of 1. As if that wasn’t powerful enough, for every unmodified hit roll of 6 he rolls with the spear, he scores 2 hits instead of 1, meaning he could potentially deal 18 wounds with those attacks alone. His carnosaur also brings the thunder with its claws and its massive jaws, which can bring down even the mightiest of foes. The claws give him 2 attacks that hit and wound on 3+ and deal 2 damage, but the real danger is in it’s Massive Jaws. They give the carnosaur 3 attacks that hit on a 4+, wound on a 3+, and deal a whopping 5 wounds with -1 Rend. Even better, should he be fighting any models with 7 or less wounds, he gets +1 to hit. Considering he has the potential to deal 20 damage, that means he could conceivable knock out an entire unit of infantry by himself, especially when combined with the claws and the Oldblood’s spear.

But Wait…There’s MORE!

Being a giant scary lizard, the Oldblood on Carnosaur also plays havoc with enemy morale, subtracting 1 from the Bravery of all units within 3”. So should anything actually survive his initial onslaught, it’s likely to just flee the battlefield. The Oldblood can also buff his fellow Saurus with his Wrath of the Seraphon command ability, allowing him to select a nearby Saurus unit to get +1 to hit in the combat phase. Of course, if you’re feeling particularly vicious, you can use it on the Oldblood himself, making all of his ridiculously powerful attacks hit on a 2+. Basically, the Oldblood can fit into almost any roll you need it to, living up to the legend of the mighty Kroq-Gar and Grymloq of old.
