Salamanders Vanguard on Patrol: Heretics and Xenos beware!

I only had to take one look at the Primaris Vanguard in the Shadowspear set to know I’d have to paint these guys.

These guys have all the cool detailed armor of the other Primaris with added flight fins. Their long-barrelled autocannons look absolutely brutal especially with the ammo feed. I was even able to fit Salamanders shoulderpads on them, since they just wear tacticus armor. Took a bit of aggressive clipping to get the old ones off. The sergeant got a head from the Salamanders upgrade sprue that was probably destined for an aggressor. Sadly the Supressors rules are lacking, so I don’t know if I’ll ever field them. But they look great posing for pictures. Maybe in 9th…

These guys are a lot more useful. They’re the only Phobos-armored marines I’ve painted. The cool Salamanders custom shoulderpads don’t fit on them, but the decals that came with them worked great.

These guys are a good example of how mono-pose miniatures can work so well sometimes. Sure the sprues give you the option for pistols and stuff but the poses don’t have the same level of action.

And here’s a close-up of the medic.

The Phobos Librarian is another great model from the set. The cloak began with a basecoat of Averland Sunset. Then I painted stripes of Thamar Black and Mephiston Red over it. The shading and highlights are done by using transparent matte medium to blend new lighter or darker layers into the dry paint beneath. I think the results worked pretty well but it’s something I need to practice more with.

Here are those awesome snipers with more of those cloaks. Another group of awesome models from the set.

I decided to show the backs of these guys too.

Phobos Lieutenant taking advantage of more cool decals.

The Phobos Captain also received a head from the Salamanders sprue. The standard one just really didn’t seem to fit for the chapter.

Of all the models that I’ve fielded from the set, he’s been the most useful – sniping characters and nabbing VPs.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures! I paint models from all sorts of game systems. Check out my blog toomini.wordpress.com and follow me on instagram as t00mini.
