Games Workshop is showcasing some new Stratagems for the Necrons and they also have a new look!

Get ready for a ton of new options for Necrons as they march forth from their Tomb Worlds. We’re getting a preview of their stratagems today and they apparently have a new color coding system to boot.

via Warhammer Community

“The new Necrons codex features a whopping 40 Stratagems that can be used in addition to the core ones in Warhammer 40,000 Core Rule Book, and these are split into six different categories. This makes it easier for you to keep track of the different Stratagems and when in game they are used – the same thing is happening to all of Stratagems in the new codexes.”

Yep – you read that right! 40 Stratagems are coming and they are split among six different categories. These categories are also color coded for easy-of-use, too.

Battle Tactic Stratagems

This is an way to auto-wound with a shooting attack for 1 CP. Make that pivotal shot count by ensuring it wounds the target.

Epic Deed Stratagems

This one is perfect for getting those Reanimation Protocols one more shot to bring back some “dead” Necrons. And it does have a pretty Epic name.

Requisition Stratagems

Of all the color options out there, GW went with the same brown for this category. Anyhow, Requisition Stratagems are the ones that happen before the battle. In this case, this Stratagem allows for you to nominate one Necron Overlord to gain the Phaeron keyword. This is similar to Captain becoming the Chapter Master – only for Necrons…sorta.

Mechanically, it allows for the new Phaeron to use “My Will Be Done” an additional time and that’s just handy.

Strategic Ploy Stratagems

Sometimes you just need to toss some Scarabs Swarms at your problems. And sometimes (when you spend the 1 CP to do it) they blow-up and take care of the problem for you.

If you need to get a unit of Ophydian Destroyers across the battlefield, why not use Burrowing Nightmares to have them tunnel their way across the board?

Wargear Stratagems

This is an interesting concept – a wargear upgrade mid-battle? Well, sort of. It only works for the one attack, but it’s a cool concept. And it’s great for a densely packed targeting area.

Dynastic Stratagems

And let’s not forget that each of the Necron Dynasties also gets a Stratagems – that’s six if you were counting.

The Szarekhan’s Stratagem is a Wargear Stratagem as well. It helps with those pesky Psychic Powers and gives you the option to stop them from working. It will cost you a CP, but for an army that doesn’t have Psykers of their own, that seems like a fair price to pay.

That’s it for the preview of the Stratagems. We’re still not 100% sure what’s up with the color coding – or why GW wanted to categories these Stratagems to being with. But apparently that’s going to be a thing! We’ll have to wait to see if this has some other rules associated with it or if it was just a visual Quality-of-life improvement.
