Want to start a new army but aren’t sure which box to get? Here are our top picks for the Start Collecting! boxes from Game Workshop!

The Start Collecting! Sets (and now Combat Patrol boxes) are all really good deals. If you’re looking to get started with a new army they typically offer a great starting point for their respective armies and have models you’ll want to use. That said, there are a few that rise above the rest in terms of just how good/useful they are. So let’s take a look!

Start Collecting! Thousand Sons

This box is quite a good deal for various reasons. HOWEVER, you’re only going to want to purchase one of them. Why? Because it comes with the unique character Ahriman in the box. And since you can only run one of him in any army, you’re pretty much good to go after you pick-up once copy of this box. It’s still a great set and has useful units regardless – and it’s still only $95.

Start Collecting! Daemons of [Chaos God HERE]

Hey, what’s still $90 bucks and has the core for whatever Daemons of Chaos army you want to start? That’s right, the Start Collecting! Daemons of Chaos boxes are all really good deals. AND you can use those same models for both 40k AND Age of Sigmar. If you’re looking for the absolute best bang for your buck, the Chaos Daemon Start Collecting! sets can’t be beat!

Of the four do I have a favorite? Well, if I wanted to start an army immediately, I’d go with Khorne version. Why? Because three boxes and a Bloodthirster and you’ve basically the core of an army. And again, it can be used in both 40k and AoS. You’re double dipping!

Start Collecting! Astra Militarum

If you’re looking for one of the most meat and potatoes boxes ever, then you need to check out the Astra Militarum box. A Leman Russ, 10 dudes, and a Commissar. If you’re playing The Guard, you’ll find a place for these models for sure – Oh and it’s still only $90!

Start Collecting! Tyranids

Oh I’m sorry, is my Hivemind showing? The Tyranid box is still a good deal and has some pretty useful units – if you’re going for a Genestealer based Tyranid army. Genestealers are still close combat monsters and when you toss in a Broodlord, they only get better. Plus you’ve got the hard hitting Trygon kit (which can alternatively be built as a Mawloc or Trygon Prime). It’s a big beasty and lots of deadly CC options. As a box, it’s a great generic addition to a Tyranid collection AND a pretty useful box if you wanted to play Kill Team, too. For $95, it’s a good starting point.

Well there you have our lists for the best Start Collecting! Sets. Do you agree? Which Start Collecting or Combat Patrol set is your favorite and why? Let us know in the comments!
