Would you sign up to fight in a war 30 years in the future if meant saving humanity?

Netflix and Warner Brothers have released a bunch of movies this year. It’s time for Amazon to catch up while they’re making that extremely expensive LotR series, and they’re offering up a sci-fi action story with Chris Pratt as its lead.

In The Tomorrow War, the world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester. Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist and his estranged father in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.

The premise feels played out, so I hope writer Zach Dean (Deadfall),  is going to be able to offer something different that makes apocalyptic war with future aliens feel fresh. It does look like it could be a fun popcorn watch, though.

This is director Chris McKay’s (The Lego Batman Movie) first live-action feature; it stars Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Jasmine Mathews, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Keith Powers.

The Tomorrow War debuts on Amazon Prime on July 2nd.
