The next installment of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Stone Ocean, will be coming to Netflix this winter and we finally have a trailer!

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of those shows that almost impossible to describe and the most honest and accurate attempts sound like the ramblings of a madperson. JoJo is certifiably bonkers with a longstanding and dedicated fandom that makes the entire thing seem like some sort of inside joke or a cult, but in reality, it’s just weird, silly anime full of over the top fights, memeable moments, and costume designs that leave us all wondering if writer Hirohiko Araki really wanted to be a fashion designer and somehow fell into being a world famous mangaka by accident. In April 2021 it was announced that part six of this ridiculous and ridiculously beloved series would be finally getting animated, and over the weekend Netflix released the official trailer and a December 2021 release date.

Overall JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure follows the Joestar/Cujoh family through the generations as various family members realize that they have special powers and sworn enemies. Every part follows a different family member and their often also super-powered friends with very little connection to the previous part outside of vague familial ties and every part is drastically different from the last, making this a show that’s uniquely easy to jump into at the beginning of any part, but also nearly impossible to describe.

In the first part Jonathan Joestar fights the vampire Dio (you know, from the memes). In the third part Jotaro Kujo, Jonathan’s great great grandson has to fight Dio again, but now with slightly different powers. And in upcoming part six, Jolyne Cujoh, Jotaro’s estranged daughter, will….. go to jail in Florida in 2011 for a crime disciples of Dio framed her for.

This is a series known for its one of a kind art style and character designs, music pun names (there’s a character in part one named Robert E. O. Speedwagon and another in part six named Foo Fighters), and some of the most unique takes on super powers in any comic. Powers range include stopping time, unraveling their own bodies, but with only one power per character, every episode has a some of the most never-saw-that-coming creative uses of powers possible.

With a voice cast including Fairouz Ai (How Heavy Are The Dumbells You Lift?), Daisuke Ono (previous JoJo seasons and Attack On Titan), and Mariya Ise (Hunter x Hunter) Stone Ocean will debut worldwide on Netflix in December of this year before is Japanese broadcast in January 2022. Like every JoJo season since 2012, production is being handled by animation studio, David Productions, but the exclusive and early release to Netflix is a huge departure from the way anime is usually distributed on an international scale and may be a sign for what’s to come in the industry.

At this time we don’t know how many episodes Stone Ocean is planned to run for, but the manga encompassed seventeen volumes. Additionally, its premiere will mark 153 episodes of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure in total.
