Whether you go to a theater or watch on HBOMax at home, this action-packed anti-hero movie is a must-see.

This review of The Suicide Squad is spoiler-free! Any plot points read here can be gleaned by a close look at the movie trailers.

During the first 20 minutes of The Suicide Squad, I thought “this is a movie for the Guardians of the Galaxy fan who thought ‘this is great, but there could be more decapitation’.” I mean right down to the comically blunt wrestler and the mono-syllabic, anthropomorphic creature.

I have never been so giddy about being so wrong.

The newest edition to the DC live-action universe doesn’t waste any time– our rag-tag group of anti-heroes are suited up and ready to defend America as Task Force X almost immediately. While the story doesn’t lack for plot, it doesn’t waste time on elaborate back-story either. Using creative methods of conversation and flashbacks, we manage to learn plenty about each member of our lovable team without sacrificing any action.

Much like Birds of Prey, there are a number of creative shots, effects, and stunts that give Squad its own unique feel. With so many (anti)heroes in the spotlight, every character still makes an impression. It’s hard to say who stole the show, but there are certainly highlights.

The not-so-bright but 100% lovable King Shark will certainly trigger your “aww” response. Finally, someone in Hollywood is representing sharks as the cuddly ocean puppies that they really are. With his insatiable appetite and child-like curiosity, I will be one of many insisting that DC gimme a plushy version Nanaue. Suck on that, Jaws.

Ratcatcher 2 is another heart-warmer. Her relationship with Bloodsport gives the team a familial feeling, and her helpful little rat pals make this movie a playful romp for anyone who likes misunderstood animals.

No one will be surprised to learn that John Cena delivers pure comedy gold throughout this movie. But just because the former WWE star gives us reliable laughs doesn’t mean that Peacemaker is without his surprises.

Like every character on the team, there’s more to his story than audiences might expect, and the end credits scene leaves us plenty to chew on before the premiere of his upcoming TV show.

John Cena fills us in on the colloquial meaning of “starfish”, thanks to Warner Bros.

Margot Robbie once again charms audiences with her portrayal of Harley Quinn, a character whose own “spin-off” movie laid the groundwork for the unique look and feel of The Suicide Squad. Harley has plenty of memorable moments in the movie, but my favorite has to be a stunning display of aerial escape and some very dexterous toes.

Another star of the film? The soundtrack. Once again, in the style of Birds, every song bears a cheeky commentary on exactly what’s happening in the scene. With elements of punk, 90s alt-rock, and a Johnny Cash opening, you may have to exercise a little restraint to avoid singing in the theater.

But don’t sing or talk during the movie or Bloodsport will kill you, courtesy of Warner Bros.

The Suicide Squad is a delightful romp that went above and beyond what I anticipated. Buckets of fun, packed with surprises, and a whole cast of lovable misfits, it certainly seems like DC has found its stride in the delightful anti-hero genre.
