The more folks are digging into the new Ork Boyz sprue and kit; the more confusing it gets.

Yesterday Games Workshop revealed the contents of the new Ork Combat Patrol. Included in it were the first sprue shots of those muscley-looking Ork boyz that folks have been clamoring for.

The new lads

Alongside the painted models we got this sprue shot:

And that is where things started to go off the rails. Before we dig in, let’s take a moment to go back and look at the previous Ork Boyz kit:

The old Boyz.

Digging Into the New Kit

Right of the bat, there are far fewer bits in the new kit. Enterprising folks started to tear down the sprue to figure out exactly how it went together and came up with this. (next images via reddit/r/orks subreddit):

These certainly look like easy-to-build push-fit minis. You can see the holes and pegs easily. They are also mono-pose, obviously. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, and it does seem to be the new GW way of doing things. But the big change is where are all the weapon options? The previous Boyz kit allows you to assemble a full squad with either shooting or melee options.  This kit has no such flexibility. So of course a hobbyist went and asked GW and got back a response:

And there we have it in black and white. As you can imagine, several people didn’t take it very well. But then after a moment of wailing and gnashing of teeth, another image appeared. This one showing the previous Ork Boyz kit in a retail store IN 9TH EDITION boxing:

Confusion Reigns

And now no one knows what’s going on. But basically, it breaks down into three options:

The New Boyz are a limited kit and a “fully detailed” version with more options will appear at a later date alongside them.

The New Boyz and the Old Boyz will both stay in production, and coexist, allowing hobbyists to pick and choose the Ork look and assembly options they desire.

The New Boys are here to stay, and the Old Boyz will be withdrawn in time, leaving these as the only option.

~Time will tell, but no matter what, someone, somewhere is going to be mad, and they might even make a YouTube video about it. 🙂
