There’s more than one giant monster squad tromping through the Realms.

Thanks to some bad hatchery management, the new Dragon Riders and the massive Draconiths that accompany them have been delayed until the cold hours of December. However, even in the face of these setbacks, no need to despair fellow monster lovers! Age of Sigmar gives us a ton of awesome options for monster riding armies, and in the time of 3.0, they are better than they’ve ever been. Of course you’ve got the Sons of Behemat, the stompy totally-not-Imperial-Knights faction, but they aren’t really RIDING monsters, so they won’t be included in this list, but here are three different AoS armies that will fill the dragon-riding void until the Draconiths arrive.

Thunder Lizards

One of the subfactions of the Coalesced Seraphon, the Thunder Lizards are the army of the wild, primordial jungle, allowing you to unleash the deadliest of their reptilian monsters in great numbers. The subfaction makes the mighty Stegadon a Battleline choice, meaning if you wish, you can bring an entire army of just stompy dino goodness, with all the melee power of a Carnosaur leader, the magical support of an Engine of the Gods, and the stalwart wall of a Bastiladon. While perhaps not the most tactically flexible army in the book, you’ll be hitting exceptionally hard and have more monstrous Rampages than you can shake a stick at. Just watch out for Sigmar’s favorite huntress.

Gristlegore

The only thing better than an army of undead cannibals sweeping across the battlefield in an unending tide is a group of undead cannibals backed up by giant bats and dragons. The Gristlegore subfaction allows you to take the Royal Terrorgheist and Royal Zombie Dragon as battleline, letting you unleash the highest potency of Ushoran’s curse on your hapless foes. With all the special rules available to you, you’ll also be striking faster than your enemy and even death will not stop your monsters. Consume your foes with reckless abandon (because let’s be honest, that Terrogheist eats a lot).

Beastclaw Raiders

The colder half of the Ogor Mawtribes, the Beastclaw Raiders allow you to bring their massive Stonehorn and Thundertusk mounts as battleline, letting you unleash the fury of the endless winter on your foes. Ogors are terrifying enough on their own, so putting a pair of them on the back of an angry mountain beast just sweetens the pot (which is of course something an Ogor is always happy to do). Even the smaller Mournfangs are a sizeable threat, far larger than the steeds ridden by the other, smaller races, and the Beastclaws use them to great effect. Take control of the avalanche and bury your foes beneath your armored feet.

What’s your favorite monster rider?
