Games Workshop just unleashed the new Battlescroll update for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar. Get ready for some big shifts moving forward.

We’ve been waiting to get our hands on this update since the 40k version was released. The new Battlescroll update is out and official for all Games Workshop events moving forward. It’s designed for use in Matched Play which means it’s perfectly fine to use in narrative and open play style games, too. But what changed? A lot of things! Let’s check out some of the major changes.

“If you are the kind of ambitious Age of Sigmar player that likes building models the size of your head, then this may just be the update for you. The first-ever Battlescroll is starting off big, with a theme of ‘Gods & Heroes’.”

It’s a 5-page update that includes some meta-shifting changes for sure. Each Grand Alliance got an update with some big changes to the BIG characters. For example, Kragnos, Nagash, and Archaon each got a new Warscroll. They also received some updates via the Grand Alliance rules, too.

For a full breakdown of each change, you can read about that directly from Games Workshop. It’s not all nerfs or buffs either. It’s a bit of a mix for these Gods and Heroes on the battlefield.

Points Updates

Just about every battletome got a points adjustment of some sort as well. That’s not all — there are also a trio of changes that are going to have a ripple effect moving forward:

Heroic Recovery requires the Hero to be more than 3″ away from all enemy units. That should force them to get away from combat if they want to try and heal. Unleash Hell got a rework as well. The range dropped from 9″ to 6″. And finally (and perhaps the biggest change) is that the Amulet of Destiny is now a 6+ ward. We might actually see heroes take something other than the Amulet moving forward now!

On top of all these changes, GW also updated a slew of FAQs to be inline with the changes made with the Battlescroll update. You’re going to want to pop over to the FAQ page and check on your army to see what’s changed.

This is the big update for Age of Sigmar we were waiting on from Games Workshop. Did it go far enough? I know that there are folks out there that wanted this update to go even further. But overall, I think this is a good direction for the game. In particular, the change to Amulet of Destiny is a good example as it was too much of an “auto-include” in many lists.

Conversely, Kragnos getting a 6+ ward is …maybe not enough but we’ll see how that pairs with his new ability to avoid instadeath. There are also all the point changes to dig into as well. We’ll have to wait to see how this changes the game up in the new year.

What do you think of these changes to the game?
