Ubisoft, developer of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Far Cry 5, and Far Cry 6 is remaking the original 2002 Xbox classic, Splinter Cell.

Ubisoft Toronto announced the return of Sam Fisher back when they release their remake of the original 2002 Xbox classic, Splinter Cell. The developer is known for 2013’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist, 2018’s Far Cry 5, and 2021’s Far Cry 6. And now, they’re in the early stages of development on their next upcoming addition to the Splinter Cell series.

Ubisoft Remakes Splinter Cell

Producer, Matt West, said in an interview posted to the Ubisoft website,

“I think it kind of has to be a remake as opposed to a remaster. Although we’re still in the very earliest stages of development, what we’re trying to do is make sure the spirit of the early games remains intact, in all of the ways that gave early ‘Splinter Cell’ its identity.”

In line with keeping the spirit of the original intact, the upcoming remake will not be an open world game. A lot like many other Ubisoft offerings have been.

The Splinter Cell remake will also feature gameplay with linear levels and a focus on stealth over action. West goes on to explain that he thinks gamers have “an even more refined palate” now. To meet these lofty expectations the studio is “building [Splinter Cell] from the ground up,” with completely updated visuals.

Relaunching a Franchise

Chris Auty, the creative director for the project, believes the remake will be a “solid base” for the future of the franchise. He thinks that the remake will keep intact what made the 2002 Splinter Cell so special.

“It’s safe to say a lot of us on the team are stealth purists, and we’re behind that level of seriousness when it comes to those kinds of mechanics, and those sorts of things that we want to see in this game. And we’re very, very aware of what makes classic Splinter Cell what it is.”

He says the team is focusing on making a game that rewards smart gameplay and players who make plans. The game will be great for those who utilize all of their tools and gadgets, and look for creative ways to outmaneuver all of the obstacles in their path.

Last year Ubisoft announced the development of a Splinter Cell VR game. It seems there will be two in production at the same time. Unfortunately, the upcoming remake is still in early development. So there is no timeframe for when we can see the game released or which consoles it will be made for.

But we do know that the game is on its way. Ubisoft is currently looking to hire artists, designers, programmers, and more.
