It’s a new year and that can only mean one thing: time to make and break promises. Uphold traditions with these D&D resolutions.

Why should Christmas get all the holiday D&D-themed goodness? New Year’s is a magical time where the first day feels like limitless potential and by the time you hit day 5 you’re tired and wondering why you ever do anything. And that’s worth celebrating. So here are five magical spells that can help your characters make huge new years goals and then break them in under a week.

Break Your D&D Resolution of Heroism

This is the D&D equivalent of swearing that this time you’ll actually use the gym membership you bought yesterday. Heroism is all about the promise of living a better more active life. You’re immune to fear. You get temporary hit points at the start of each of your turns. It’s pretty much all step on the gas all the way.

Until it wears off after about a minute and those temporary hit points vanish like so many elliptical machine seats beneath jackets and piled up mail.

Alter Self

This year it’s a new you! Maybe you’ve decided you’re going to look different. You’ll stop wearing those old sweatpants. You’ll dress sharp every day–clothes make the humanoid, after all.

Only with Alter Self you don’t actually have to do any of that. You get all the benefits of telling everyone you changed your look without actually having to do any of the work needed to. So you break the promise as you make it but get all the exciting things from it anyway. It’s a win-win situation, except for the part where you don’t actually change.

Conquer Your D&D Resolution to Eat Healthy with Prestidigitation

Were you going to learn how to cook this year? Not going to eat out as much? And yet…cooking is so hard. It takes so much time to prepare. Your old pal prestidigitation is here though, ready to reflavor a pound of food or drink at any time. Make that wilting pile of lettuce you bought in a moment of self-delusion taste like the dreams of a different you. A better you. One who actually knows how to cook quinoa.

Modify Memory

You know how, somewhere, deep down inside you know when you’re lying to yourself? With Modify Memory’s ability to magically change what you know deep down inside, you won’t have to! Give yourself a better life and outlook almost instantaneously.

Wish

And of course, if you work hard and get to 9th level as a spellcaster (or get lucky enough to find a scroll or magic item) you can just use the most powerful magic to reshape reality to be what you actually wanted it to be. Of course, there’s no guarantee it will work. But if you wanted guarantees you’d be making small, incremental lifestyle changes over a long period of time, not trying to use cheat codes to rewrite reality.
