Is a new Godzilla series enough to convince you to become an AppleTv+ subscriber?

Deadline broke the news that Legendary has made a deal with Apple to make a series set in the Godzilla universe.

“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the untitled series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”

What is Monarch?

Monarch first showed up in 2014’s Godzilla. It has been a constant in the most recent run of movies. Along with the monsters, Monarch ties the whole universe together.

The organization discovered the existence of monsters while investigating the sinking of a ship during WWII. Monarch tried to kill Godzilla with a nuke in the 1950s. In the 1970s they found Skull Island and Kong. They’ve assisted in the discovery of multiple Titans, and have attempted to hide them from the world.

Monarch has managed to remain secret during all of this, which the new Godzilla series might change.

Can a new Godzilla series survive on AppleTv+?

It’s got a good team behind it so far. Legendary Television is producing the new Godzilla series with Toho. Sci-fi veteran Chris Black (most recently from Star Trek: Discovery) and comic book writer Matt Fraction are executive producers. No casting yet.

The big question is: will this die because it’s on AppleTV+ or will it lead to fans subscribing? The service has some great shows, but it’s consistently one of the smallest players in the streaming wars. Maybe this will turn it around.
