Netflix’s The Sandman is one of the most anticipated shows of the year. Author Neil Gaiman shares details, plus a new on-set photo.

The Sandman combines modern myth and dark fantasy. Its weaves contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend into an amazing story about the Dream King as he fixes the cosmic errors he’s made over his long lifetime.

It starts with Roderick Burgess.

The show is going to be unlike the other fantasy series coming out this year– it is far from traditional. In the upcoming issue of Empire, Gaiman opened up about bringing his groundbreaking comic to the screen.

“You watch Episode 1 and think, ‘Oh, I get this thing: it’s like Downton Abbey, but with magic. Then you’ll be wondering, ‘What the hell is this?’ by Episode 2, when you’re meeting Gregory The Gargoyle in The Dreaming. Episode 5 is about as dark and traumatic as anything is ever gonna get, then you’ve got Episode 6, which is probably the most feel-good of all the episodes.”

“If you didn’t like an episode of Game Of Thrones, you probably won’t like any other episode of Game Of Thrones. With Sandman, it’s all about surprising you. It’s all about reinventing itself. It’s all about taking you on a journey you’ve not been on before.”

The interview comes with a new photo. The image shows Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) alongside the head librarian in the Dreaming, Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong). Lucienne oversees a collection of every book ever imagined, written or unwritten.
