Journeys through the Radiant Citadel packs 13 adventures into one handy volume. Here’s a preview of the first one.

The upcoming adventure anthology, Journeys through the Radiant Citadel promises plane hopping adventure through many worlds. At the heart of all the adventure is the titular Radiant Citadel. The Radiant Citadel wraps around a massive gemstone known as the Aurora Diamond.

It’s a cool location. In ancient days a bygone civilization carved the Citadel out of the fossil of a long dead massive creature. What was this creature? Why did it seek the shelter of the life-giving Aurora Diamond? We may never know. But we do know what awaits in the first adventure in the Radiant Citadel. And if you’ve watched Chopped, you might know what’s in store.

Salted Legacy is the Radiant Citadel’s first adventure. Like most 1st-level adventures and introductory adventures its goal is to give you the lay of the land. But unlike starter adventures like Lost Mines of Phandelver or Dragon of Icespire Peak, it’s meant to be short and contained. An intro to D&D that can be played in a single session with just enough meat to sink your teeth into.

And what a meal this first adventure is. Written by designer Surena Marie, the adventure Salted Legacy is all about two rival families who make their living in a vibrant night market. There are many different races in here, kobolds, dragonborn, goblins, etc. But the adventure plays out a little different.

As Marie revealed to Polygon, the adventure is largely inspired by Thailand.

“My mom is from Thailand, and that’s where largely this adventure is inspired from. With being first-generation, there is this strange duality that you have to navigate where you want to live the big American dream; you want to live the life that your parents had come from a different country to give you. But at the same time, there’s a large part of us as being first-generation that worries about losing our culture, or we aren’t even granted full access to it because of the pressure to be more Americanized.”

All of which means the adventure focuses on “the push and pull between industry and tradition.”

According to Marie the inspiration from the adventure comes from cooking shows like Chopped. The new adventure is low stakes, and as a result gets to draw players in to the roleplay as well as the combat aspects of D&D. Marie intended the adventure to be accessible to not only new players, but streamers and content creators as well. Marie acknowledges the role creators play in D&D. Which should be no surprise, given her background with Rivals of Waterdeep.

You can check out the adventure for yourself on June 21st, when Journeys through the Radiant Citadel launches.

Happy Adventuring!
