Root: the Tabletop Roleplaying Game is an RPG adaptation of the incredibly fun asymmetric game of woodland warfare. Root will soon be out.

Fans of Root, A Game of Woodland Might and Right, will doubtless be excited to know that the tabletop RPG adaptation of the board game that pits cats vs birds vs weird lizard cults, will soon be out in the wild. You can still pre-order Root the RPG from Magpie games, while they fulfill orders for their Kickstarter backers, but the expected release is Q1 2022. Which is the time we’re currently in.

If you haven’t seen anything about it, here’s a quick primer. Root: the Tabletop Roleplaying Game uses the Powered by the Apocalypse framework to emulate the world of the board game. Players take on the roles of Vagabonds and make their way through forest clearings. Elements from the game are lovingly recreated here. But in addition to the core rule book, you’ll find guides of all kinds. Maybe you want to play in more clearings, do more things, or just cause chaos in the woods. Magpie has something for everyone.

Let’s take a look at what’s coming.

Root: The Roleplaying Game – Core Book – $39.99

Root: The Roleplaying Game is the officially-licensed tabletop RPG based on the award-winning Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right board game by Leder Games. In Root: The RPG, you play vagabonds, individual outlaws whose adventures and alliances define the Woodland forever.

Here’s what you’ll find inside this book:

    • Nine unique playbooks, each built to help you create a vagabond whose exploits will echo in the Woodland for generations to come.
    • Easy-to-follow rules for all manner of fantasy adventure, including roguish feats, reputation and travel mechanics, and more.
    • Innovative mechanics for managing equipment, weapons, and combat that make your choices matter both tactically and narratively.
    • Detailed instructions for running Root: The RPG – crafting combats, managing factions, and more – alongside a full clearing, Gelilah’s Grove.

Root: The RPG is a fantasy adventure for three to six players of woodland creatures fighting for money, justice, and freedom from powers far greater than them. Fame and glory await!

Root RPG: Travelers and Outsiders – $39.99

Travelers & Outsiders is a supplement for Root: The Roleplaying Game, the officially licensed tabletop RPG based on the award-winning Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right board game by Leder Games – that expands the core game to include the first 4 expansion factions!

Here’s what you’ll find inside this book:

    • 10 new playbooks, expanding the types of vagabonds you can play to include pirates, raiders, scholars, heretics, raconteurs, and more.
    • 4 new expansion factions – The Riverfolk Company, Lizard Cult, Grand Duchy, and Corvid Conspiracy – for you to add to any campaign.
    • Dozens of expanded moves and tags, including weapons skills, roguish feats, natures, drives, connections, equipment tags, and pre-made gear.
    • Robust faction turn mechanics that bring the setting to life as factions seize holdings, build structures, and plot mischief across the Woodland.
    • 2 new clearings – Heartwood and Sundew Bend – that focus on adventures involving the new expansion factions and their conflicts.

Root: Clearing Booklet – $19.99

As a rule, most denizens don’t trust vagabonds – outlaws who wander the Woodland without a home – but there are times when the problems a clearing faces can’t be addressed by anyone… except those vagabonds willing to take the job.

This Clearing Booklet contains the following clearings:

    • Hookfoot Bog has always been a swampy marsh of hard mice, one in which many denizens have lived their whole lives. How will they deal with the change that the conquering Marquisate brings to the clearing?
    • The folk of Sixtoe Stand see themselves as inheritors of legend, but their recent battles mean they must throw themselves in with one of the factions at war in the Woodland. But which faction will they turn to?
    • Limmery Post – an outpost at the edge of the Woodland – remains a well-fortified clearing, perfect for a new Woodland Alliance base. Can the Alliance’s leaders convince the citizens of the Post to join the cause?
    • Coolclaw Mine is one of the Woodland’s most lucrative mines; the Marquise herself sent the trusted Lord Scowl to secure the clearing right away… but now food has grown scarce. How will he address the brewing insurrection?
Each clearing contains interesting conflicts, important residents (with stats), unique locations, and special rules. You can use these clearings as the setting for a one-shot or as part of a longer campaign in the broader Woodland.
Happy Adventuring!
