D&D Direct delivered even more information about the upcoming starter set, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Let’s take a look.

The new D&D starter set, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is the start of a new era in WotC’s intro to Dungeons & Dragons. At D&D Direct, we got to talk about the new starter set, Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and how the new starter set marks a brand new initiative to get new players introduced to the game. Here’s a closer look at the starter set, and WotC’s plans around it.

Dragons of Stormwreck Isle – New Details

For starters, we have a much clearer look at the new starter set. At D&D Direct, WotC revealed the starter set has the basic rules, an adventure, and five pre-generated PCs, alongside a set of six dice.

But the team at WotC is putting special care into making this the perfect introductory experience. During the press Q&A session, Shelly Mazzanoble revealed that this was fine tuned with “first-timers in mind.”

“Our core goal is an introductory experience, drawing on 8 years of feedback to make this as non-intimidating as possible. Also there are lots of dragons–both Dungeons AND Dragons in this set!”

For instance, the new adventure is written with advice on how to read a stat block and what the different numbers mean. But new players will find a lot more in the starter set. WotC is hard at work on a set of digital tools meant to welcome new players and new DMs.

The Dragons of Stormwreck Isle boxed set will include a QR code in its starter book that will link you to a new player hub. There, you’ll find video tutorials, tips on roleplaying, and even an interactive demo experience. And in a little under 15 minutes you’ll have your D&D-legs, so to speak.

These tools are not just aimed at new players. There are video tools for new DMs as well, including one that looks at how to run an encounter, one that looks at handling narrative and collaboration at the table, as well as working to increase ones comfort with “collaboration & improv.”

Hopefully new players will feel right at home.

D&D After School

But Stormwreck Isle isn’t the only beginning player set. The WotC team also revealed that they’re rolling out a “D&D Curriculum” for school programs. They want to help kids to learn how to tell stories and play D&D. The after-school program contains copies of the Starter Set and instructional material, as well as some handy pointers on how D&D can help a developing mind learn skills like math and storytelling.

The new starter set will be coupled with the after-school club program. All as part of WotC’s effort to introduce newer players to the game.

Happy Adventuring!
