Moon Knight Episode 4 goes full on adventure mode and reveals many secrets.

At the end of Episode 3 (read the recap here) Marc lost Khonshu’s assistance in order to find Arthur Harro and the tomb of Ammit. Marc is stowed away while Steven and Layla set out on the next part of their journey. There are confusing moments of romance and a chase Richard O’Connell fans will appreciate.

Major Spoilers Below the Poster

Moon Knight Episode 4 – The Sarcophagus

The two humans venture out into the desert with their map. They come upon an abandoned camp in front of an entrance of a tomb. The combination of Layla and Steven’s knowledge is invaluable during this leg of their journey.  They discover it’s a maze shaped like the eye of Horus aka the eye of mind that has six points. As they move through the maze it becomes clear that there has been a fight in the tomb – recent enough that the blood isn’t dry.

This tomb is still operational. The pair are forced to hide as a long dead heka priest drags in a dude in a plaid shirt and starts to extract his organs. Steven squishes the priest, which slows him down a nit. There’s still plenty of danger ahead. The two split up and Layla ends up taking the priest out once and for all while trying not to fall into a bottomless pit.

Just when she’s caught her breath, she sees Harrow. He’s just chilling on the other side. It seems that his cult found a different entrance.

Steven takes a different route. As he moves through a chamber filled with relics. He recognizes art and objects depicting Thutmose II, Nefertiti, and Macedonian hieroglyphs that are very out of place. He has found the long lost tomb of Alexander the Great, who was apparently the voice of Ammit. Steven tears Alexander’s skull apart and finds the stone sculpture of Ammit hidden in his chest.

The Secret(s)

Throughout their time in the tomb Marc and Steven wrestle with who exactly is in a relationship with Layla. With Marc being possessive and Steven being a big pile of goo. Layla isn’t really sure how to handle that aspect, either. At this point she’s accepted that there are two men in her husband’s body. It’s the lighter of the secrets in this episode

The heavy is conversation between Layla and Harrow that focuses on her father. The late archaeologist that was killed by mercenaries. Harrow does all but share the big secret Marc is hiding from her. Marc was involved in her father’s death. While on a job Marc brought her father and his killer together. I’m going to assume that it was Frenchie since his name came up in Marc’s phone.

Their conversation is cut short by Harrow and his goons… and Marc being shot several times without the suit.

Inside

Without Khonshu to protect him, Marc falls into oblivion. Oblivion in this case is an alternate universe of bingo and rubrics cubes and cupcakes and Tomb Buster starring Steven Grant. Gus is there. It’s clear that we’re somewhere in Marc’s psyche. He’s in a weird, very white version of Putnam Psychiatric Hospital. There are objects around him that link him to his reality. Dr. Harrow becomes a psychiatrist (cult members orderlies) trying to convince him that this is reality.

Marc manages to escape and runs through halls. He rescues Steven from a sarcophagus he’s trapped in. The two pass a third on their way further down the hall – they choose not to set the inhabitant free. And then they meet hippo-headed Taweret (voiced by Antonia Salib) and screech.

Taweret is a protective household goddesses that is associated with fertility and children. I wonder if she’s been with Marc from the start. The trauma that caused his DID is not recent and he would have needed a protector of children. She is also part of the Ennead – but didn’t show up to the last meeting for some reason. There were several empty seats. I’m curious to see if more of the gods appear to help… or hinder.

Moon Knight Episode 4 – Quick Thoughts

This is the episode I’ve been waiting for. It got weird. Really weird. I hope we’re here for at least half of the next episode – really, all of it but I’ll take what I can get. It could go one of several ways – Harrow is trapping Marc in his mind for some reason, the gods are trapping Marc in his mind for some reason, Marc is trying to save himself from dying by escaping into his mind, or… ?

  • Alexander the Great was anointed Pharaoh in 322 bc
  • The mix of psych ward and gods is inspired by Moon Knight (2016) #1
  • The bandage on Layla’s finger has a scarab drawn on it
  • Steven’s sarcophagus had Isis on it
  • The sarcophagus Steven and Marc pass by has a symbol of Ra and Horus on it
  • The statue on Harrow’s desk appears to be Khnum

New episodes of Moon Knight drop on Disney+ every Wednesday through May 4th.
