It wouldn’t be Top Gun without plenty of exhilarating flying sequences. Take a look behind the scenes at how the cast prepared for high speed flights.

Pete Mitchell returns to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program. He is back to his old, smart-ass ways in Top Gun: Maverick. They’re really playing up the nostalgia, Cruise’s star power, and stunts. If you’re looking for a movie with a bunch of badass fighter plane sequences this is going to be a blast.

They spent a bunch of time and money filming fighter jets doing cool stuff. This behind the scenes look focuses on the planes and all of the training the cast had to do.

I expected that the actors would be getting in planes and filming in the air. The first movie did that, as well. I had no idea until this BOH look that the actors were their own camera operators for lack of space.

Top Gun: Maverick Synopsis & Cast

Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are reprising their roles. Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Miles Teller as Goose’s son joins them. Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion) is in the director’s seat. The official synopsis fills in the gaps from the trailer:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. He finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen. Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw, call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Top Gun: Maverick flies into theaters May 27th.
