The D&D movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, had a teaser at the recent CinemaCon. Here’s what they showed.

Not long after the D&D movie gets an official title and release date (Honor Among Thieves, March 3rd 2023), comes the first teasing glimpses about what’s actually in the movie. At CinemaCon, Paramount displayed roughly 30 seconds of footage from the Honor Among Thieves as part of their promotional reel.

And though you can’t see the early footage unless you were at CinemaCon, quite the picture has been painted. Deadline described a quick glance with “the production quality of a top-notched historical epic.” Which is good news right off the jump.

Meanwhile SlashFilm had high praise for Regé-Jean Page who could be seen “wearing snazzy fantasy armor.” But in the ensuing days, it seems some actual D&D players were there too. A user from ENWorld was in attendance and had some juicier details about what could be seen in the scattered footage throughout the reel.

User OB1 described the footage as “what you would expect from a Marvel theatrical release,” as well as catching glimpses of Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez on horseback, and the appearance of a displacer beast.

All in all this is exciting stuff for a D&D movie. The last several have had a very loose relationship with D&D. Magic items might have made an appearance, and sure, there were dragons. But a displacer beast – one of the feywild-touched cats with tentacles, illusion power, and six legs – means they’re drawing on deeper cuts. Which makes sense.

D&D is much more mainstream by now. With the hundreds of thousands of people who turn up any given Thursday to watch Critical Role and the millions more who play, D&D is everywhere. You can say “this is a displacer beast” and people will know what you mean.

You can find a full breakdown of the movie details over at ENWorld. They’re absolutely worth checking out. From what we’re seeing this feels like a brand new D&D movie. It might be worth watching. We’ll know more when the first trailers hit. And with a March 3rd release date, it won’t be long now.

Happy Adventuring!
