The best part of D&D is having weird animals follow you around. Critical Role’s newly announced A Familiar Problem puts them in the spotlight.

Dungeons & Dragons is a heroic fantasy roleplaying game that exists to give you an excuse to have a cool/cute animal follow you around on your adventures. You might summon one. Get one one as a companion from a class. Maybe even turn into one. there’s something about fantasy fauna that we all enjoy. Critical Role is somewhat infamous for its animal shenanigans. From Sprinkle the Weasel and Trinket in Campaign 1, to Nugget and Professor Thaddeus in Campaign 2, animals get a lot of screen time.

But D&D being what it is, they don’t get to do much.

Until now that is. A new RPG announced from Critical Role’s publishing imprint, Darrington Press, in partnership with Honey Heist’s creator Grant Howitt, will put the spotlight on animal companions in A Familiar Problem. And it’s absolutely free.

A Familiar Problem – Darrington Press’ Newest FREE RPG

It’s basically the game everyone’s dreamed of playing since they first read the story of Sir Bearington. You play as familiars trying to corral their adventurers into doing some good.

In A Familiar Problem you’ll play as a scrappy and stressed out group of familiars trying to get a grip on the chaotic lives your adventuring party subjects, and make a difference any small way you can. To prove you’re up to adventuring, you’ll band together and undertake a daring quest of your own! You can pick up your free copy of A Familiar Problem at friendly local game stores participating in Free RPG Day on June 25th in the US and July 23rd internationally, with a wider digital release set for later this year. Visit freerpgday.com to find a participating store near you.

The game was created specifically for Free RPG day. It’s a one page game from Marisha Ray and Howitt. Ray has a long-standing history with Honey Heist. A game about being a bear and doing crimes.

As well as new friends of fur, scales, and a whole lot of chaos.
