We are taking a deep dive into the the brand new Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness Boxed set and it’s just plain awesome.

Games Workshop sent us a preview copy of the Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness boxed set and it’s jam packed with all the Horus Heresy Era goodies you need to start your very own army. We also has a surprise stowaway inside the box…was it a packing error in our favor (yes) or a hint at something coming in the future from GW (no – it was a legit packing error and GW is taking care of it).

Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness Boxed Set

Where to begin! Let’s start with a quick run down of the miniatures.

Praetor with Power Axe

Praetor with Power Sword

10 Cataphractii Terminators

40 MKVI Legion Tactical Marines

Contemptor Dreadnought

Spartan Assault Tank

And yes it’s all in plastic! On top of all those miniatures you’ll also get everything else you’ll need to get started. There’s a whopping 336 page hardback rulebook in there as well as a ton of accessories. 20 dice, orange templates, rangefinders, a transfer sheet, assembly instructions, and 4 very handy reference sheets for the rules.

Now, if you watched the video you know we had a slight mix-up with the Praetor with the Power Axe. But aside from that, everything else was spot on and awesome.

Now that we’ve got a look at the miniatures and the rest of the contents we’ve got a lot to be excited about. Assembly for the kits is a breeze — just follow the instructions! Now, we had quite a few Heresy Era miniatures already so we’re going to be saving lots of these marines for use with the upgrade packs. If you’ve already got an army ready to go but want to expand those special weapon options we suggest you do the same.

This is a fantastic place to start if you’re kicking off a crusade in the Horus Heresy. It’s perfect for a new player looking for a solid core of an army. You can easily expand from this starter force into whatever Legion specific things you’re into. It’s also really cool to get all these “Beakie” Marines in plastic! I keep going back and forth between the plastic Spartan and the Marines as my favorite additions. Don’t get me wrong, the Contemptor and Praetors are cool and all…but that Spartan!

We’re pumped to see where the Community takes it from here. The Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness Boxed set is up for pre-order this weekend! Oh and if you’re wanting to learn more about the rules and the changes…stay tuned.

So. Much. Stuff!
