This Thursday, alongside a new Panel from hell, comes Patch 8 for Baldur’s Gate 3. Alongside it, Larian Studios does “digital housecleaning.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been one of the most anticipated games since it first came out in early access in October of 2020. The game’s been through quite a few changes in the span of that early access, with an ever-expanding act I.

And while the “official” launch is still a year or so out, this latest patch has us all very excited.

If nothing else, it’s another chance for Larian to introduce a new core class or subclass to the game. But alongside Baldur’s Gate 3, Patch 8, comes a bit of “digital housecleaning.”

Baldur’s Gate 3, Patch 8 – Pre-Patch Notes

Per Larian studios’ pre-patch announcement, Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 will see a number of old patches evaporate. Which should matter very little in the grand scheme of things to most people. But if you’ve been playing on one of the older patches, you’ll not be able to download prior to Patch 6:

On to our feature presentation: Patch 8 is drawing near, and it’s going to be roughly 40GB (so make sure you have space free!), bringing the total install size for Baldur’s Gate 3 to approximately 104GB. As with our previous patches, and saves made on Patch 7 or prior will no longer be compatible when updated.

In addition, we’ll be using Patch 8 as the opportunity for a little bit of digital house-cleaning. Once it goes live, we’ll be removing the ability to download all but the 2 most recent Patches. In this case, Patches 6 and 7 will remain available for download, but we encourage all players to update to the most recent version of the game in order to get the latest fixes and content updates.

The other big news is just how big Baldur’s Gate 3 is going to be. At 104 GB, it’s rapidly approaching Total War: Warhammer 3 territory.

But you’ll be able to start the download ahead of time. You’ll just want to make sure that you keep it updated. Of course if you want to keep your pre-patch 8 saves going, you’ll have to opt in to whatever patch as a beta.

With that bit of housekeeping out of the way, let’s talk branching. We’ve got options if you want to continue saves from earlier patches, or if you want to make sure you’re staying current.

In the meantime, stay tuned for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8, and its accompanying Panel from Hell this Thursday!
