This weekend at SDCC, we learned that the Avatar the Last Airbender team will be back in an animated film about an adult Team Avatar.

San Diego Comic Con 2022 is over. And whether you spent the weekend scouting for fresh news, couldn’t avoid seeing the news on your social media feeds, or were fortunate enough to be there in person, you’re probably aware that there were a lot of announcements, drops, and first-looks.

One of which came from Avatar Korra herself, Janet Varney. While Varney couldn’t make it to SDCC in person, official Avatar and Nickelodeon pages shared this video of the Avatar voice actor sharing some exciting news about the future of the Avatar universe.

The Next Chapter for the Avatar

We’ve been waiting for the first Avatar the Last Airbender feature-length film for a while. Or even for some news about it! The original run of the beloved series ended back in 2008, and since then the fans have stayed tried and true to the universe. The sequel series Legend of Korra gave us a look at a slightly more technologically advanced world, while an ongoing book series takes us back to learn more about the previous Avatar Kyoshi. And then of course there’s the comics as well as the Avatar RPG that sparked a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign. Suffice to say, fans have not yet had enough of Avatar.

Varney co-hosts the Braving the Elements podcast with Dante Basco (voice of Zuko). In the video, she can be seen reading a copy of F.C. Yee’s Avatar: The Rise of Kyoshi. The lets us know that “[t]he first feature-length movie from Avatar Studios will be focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends, and I for one cannot wait!”

Original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino are, of course, back on board for the film. They’ll be joined by the show’s executive producer, Eric Coleman. We don’t have much more info on the project, aside from the knowledge that it will feature the g’aang when they’re older than they are after the end of the first series. How old, though, is anyone’s guess. Are we finally going to find out who Suyin Beifong’s dad is?!

The Last Airbender Universe

The Avatar series’ take place in a world where a small percentage of the population are able to control or “bend” elements. Of these benders, there is one person per generation who has the ability to master all four elements. That person also bears the responsibility of bringing peace to the world. In Avatar The Last Airbender, Aang is the young Avatar. The Legend of Korra follows his reincarnation, Avatar Kora. Both have to save the world from very different kinds of disasters.

Avatar features the kind of writing, character development, and animation that reminds us that animation can, and should, be used for more than just children’s entertainment.

Are you excited about the upcoming Avatar film? Are you looking forward to picking back up with the Aang Gaang? What story would you like to see told in this movie? Let us know in the comments!
