Goatboy’s Warhammer 40K: The Best Lord Discordants

Goatboy here and the new Chaos Space Marine book has me buzzing a bit. There’s a handful of great Lord Discordants you can build.

There are some pretty interesting builds in the book for one of my favorite pain in the butt models to build/paint – the Lord Discordant.  I remember first seeing this kit come out and getting excited on how awesome he would be.  He initially was pretty hot, got hit by some nerfs, got some buffs, and then kinda of went to a weird place in the new edition.  He was expensive, couldn’t hide that well, and didn’t always hit as hard as you wanted him too.  Still he was neat and thankfully he got pretty dang awesome in the new book.

The biggest change was moving him to 9 wounds and removing a degrading stateline.  This is huge as it lets the unit get a bit of protection as well as being good till the last wound.  I also like how much easier he has gotten to play with as he just works the same all the time.  A few dashes of warlord traits, marks, and relics and you get set up with a nice little murder monster.  I’ve got 4 of them at home because I have issues and plan on playing 2 in most of my lists.

General Purpose Lord Discordants

Here are a few set ups that seem pretty spicy.

Lord Discordant – Baleflamer, Mark of Slaanesh, Relic -Thaa’ris and Rhi’ol, the Rapacious, Warlod Trait – Flames of Spites

This guy is coming with d3 extra Impaler Chainglave and d3 extra Bladed Limb attacks that reroll to wound and each roll of a 6 to wound causes a mortal wound.  He also ends up striking first in combat so he is coming to come in hot and just get to killing.  Mix this with Red Corsairs to get advance and charge or Word Bearers to also reroll to hit and maximize your damage potential.  This is the ultimate cruise missile as they can easily be set up to come in hot and ready to murder you.  Going Mark of Slaanesh gets you the option to have Delightful Agonies put on you and gives this one a bit more survivability over the other mortal wound bomb version.

Lord Discordant – Baleflamer, Mark of Tzeentch, Relic – Gorget of Eternal Hate, Warlord trait – Unholy Fortitude

This one is just set up to be very hard to deal with.  It comes in with a +1 to it’s armor save on top of having Armor of Contempt.  This means that unless you are Ap -3 this guy will have a 2+ armor save.  On top of that it has the 4+ invulnerable save, a 5+ Feel No Pain, and it ignores the damage of the first failed saving throw just to add more spice to the mix.  Again this fits in a lot of armies and is something that can easily be the midfield pain in the rear option your opponent has to go thru.  I love him in Red Corsairs but he could be a great set up for Iron Warriors too as they already have the can’t reroll option.

Lord Discordant – Baleflamer, Relic – Ul’o’cca, the Black, Warlord Trait – Flames of Spite

This is another version of the above one but it is set up to be a mortal wound combo monster.  This guy can reroll to wound, every successful wound roll with his big chain glaive causes a mortal wound, any roll of a 6 on that weapon causes a mortal, then the rest of him attacks, and causes mortal wounds on a roll of a 6.   That is a lot of mortal wounds to come out of one model and there are a ton of options to utilize him.  I like him in Word bearers as you can combo other options to keep him alive with Stratagems and other fun things.

Legion-Specific Lord Discordants

Now let’s look at some specific builds based on Legions.  The 3 above can show up in any particular legion – bar the Mark Specific ones (Emperor’s Children, World Eater White Dwarf Disco).  There are some fun ones again as you build towards a specific Legion itself.

Emperor’s Children Murder Hobo
Lord Discordant – Baleflamer, Mark of Slaanesh, Warlord – Stimulated by Pain, Relic -Fatal Sonancy

This is a pretty basic Lord Discordant who is rushing in, taking some wounds, and throwing out fat beats at the end of every movement phase.  You want some targeted Smite like options on a guy coming in like a Mad Max monster ready to bring you sweet disco beats?  This is your guy.  Plus – he can throw the flamer out too and cause all kinds of fun interactions till he dies a glorious death and smacks you on the way down.

Alpha Legion Not so Hidden Assassin
Lord Discordant – Baleflamer, Warlord – Headhunter, Relic – Vipers Spites

This is your assassin option as they can easily auto hit with the flamer as needed or just pistol the crap out of someone at 18 inches.  They can also be a pain in close combat too as they target things with the pistol as needed.  You have a lot of weird options with his fat base and ability to jump out and murder things as needed.

Final one is something you have to burn CP for but it feels like it would be very annoying to try and chew thru.  It is another Alpha Legion but with stacked abilities to just say you only hit him on a 4+ and wound him on a 4+.  You mix in some other protection options and he is just going to take forever to chew thru.

Alpha Legion Stanky Boi
Lord Discordant – Autocannon, Mark of Nurgle, Warlord – Clandestine, Relic – Gorget of Eternal Hate

Basically this guy has multiple options for +1 to his save and if you stack some Priest prayers he ends up having cover which gives a plus one from the Warlord trait.  He then has a +1 from the Gorget and then Armor of Contempt on top of it.  Oh and he is only hit on a 4+ and with the Nurgle Strat can only be wounded on a 4+ as well.  Just seems like a model that will take forever to chew thru as he looks menacingly at the battlefield – sneering at your puny models.

All Hail the Disco!

The Discordant Lord is going to be a lynch pin of a lot of CSM strategies.  He is aggressive enough to get there, priced to show up on the table top, and it seems can do a lot of damage.  Will his fat body be too much to get around terrain and other fun things on the table top?  Time will tell as CSM players get ready to storm the battlefields.
