Attack the Block is finally getting its due with a sequel penned in part by its star – John Boyega.

In Attack the Block a gang of teens in a London housing estate fight an invasion of savage alien monsters. The streets of London become a sci-fi battle zone with a tower block as a fortress, and the heroes have to use what’s on hand to save themselves and the estate. Along with its scifi monsters, it looks at gentrification and economic disparity.  The movie is frightening due its weird aliens, and a lot of fun thanks to snappy writing and bunch of unknown (at the time) young actors led by John Boyega.

If you haven’t seen it, do so. It’s a blast and it about time for a follow up.

The sequel has been in the works for a while, and it seems we’re closer than ever to it actually happening. Director Joe Cornish has signed on again. Along with reprising his role as Moses John Boyega is producing this time, which has gotten him involved in the writing process. He spoke to Collider about the experience.

“This process has been fantastic. The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too. And then, also, there’s different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie. We’re just tryin’ to make sure we explore all of that, while bringing in a whole different vibe to that crazy ass first movie that we made.”

When Can We Expect It?

The actor is ready to return to the role of Moses and share what happened after Attack the Block ends. He still has his original script from the first movie with all of his notes to look back on, as well as the movie’s bible that was kept during the production.

“…we bring that out of the dusty corners, we blow the dust off, and we get back to work. It’s now about aging the character slightly and seeing where he’s at now.”

Boyega went on to explain that the project is getting close, that the main plot is set but they’re working out the details and making sure it’s the movie it needs to be. Thus he couldn’t share a date, but that there will be an announcement coming up before they start filming. I’m hoping that announcement comes sometime before the end of the year.
