From the gigantic tot to the purposefully nonlethal, there’s an anime sword for everybody and these are some of our favorites.

Anime is full of swords. Even shows that don’t seem like they’ll have a lot of swordplay sometimes do. And we love them for it. With so many swords out there, there are a ton of powerful, unique, and just plain cool blades. These are just a few of our favorites.

Scissor Blade (Kill la Kill)

You all know that I love Studio Trigger, and Kill la Kill is no exception. The famous Scissor Blade is exactly that, half of a pair of gigantic scissors. It’s a very weird choice for a sword, but it’s also a fun little plot point all its own. And as far as iconic anime blades go, you’ll never confuse the Scissor Blade for anything else when you see a cosplayer at a con.

Tessaiga (Inu Yasha)

Speaking of iconic anime swords, Inu Yasha’s Tessaiga is a classic. In its regular form, this blade looks like an old piece of junk. But when it’s time to get down to business it transforms into the humungous weapon we all know and love. Anime loves a giant sword and so does Inu Yasha.

Dimension Sword (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Kuwabara’s more powerful version of the Spirit Sword, the Dimension Sword can cut through anything. Including space and dimension. Kuwabara isn’t a great swordsman, but with this weapon, he doesn’t need to be.

Double Edged Tsurugi (Samurai Champloo)

Just like his fighting style, Mugen’s sword is a little different. A cross between a sai and a katana. And the sheath is extra long to disguise the sword’s actual size and store a bonus tanto.

Beam Saber (Gundam)

Gundam, an entire universe of stories about giant robots fighting space managed to make their space battles even more fun to watch with giant mech-sized lightsabers. The Beam Saber is exactly what it sounds like, and that’s pretty great on its own. But now make it big enough for the building-sized robot to wield and you may have one of anime’s best swords.

Sakabato (Rurouni Kenshin)

It may not be the flashiest sword on this list by far. But what the Sakabato lacks in wow factor it more than makes up for by being an absolute icon of the genre with a great backstory. Kenshin’s backward blade sword is designed with peace in mind. It’s designed not to kill, which is very important to the story and the title character alike

Enma (One Piece)

Throughout One Piece, Zoro goes through a few swords. It’s been a thousand episodes, they’re getting used. Enma is one of his most recent additions and is described as “able to cut to the bottom of hell.”

Demon Slayer Sword (Black Clover)

Another sword that looks too big to actually wield, the Demon Slayer is perfect for Asta. The blade deflects, repels, and drains magic. And with no magic ability of his own, Asta has no problem wielding this particular weapon.

Nichirin Blade (Demon Slayer)

The Nichirin Swords in Demon Slayer are very cool and personal to their owners. Each is handcrafted specifically for its member of the Demon Slayer Corp, and when it’s first drawn by its owners, the swords change in color to reflect the person using them.

Dragon Slayer (Berserk)

The Dragon Slayer from Berserk may have all of the hallmarks of a great anime sword. It’s immediately recognizable, it’s way too big, and it’s made specifically for cutting down the superhuman foes of the Berserk universe. It’s also large enough to double as a shield.

What is your favorite anime sword? Do you prefer them impossibly large or more liftable? Have you ever made or bought any replica anime swords? Let us know in the comments!
