Not all of this season’s horror movies are filled with jump scares. Bones and All brings something different to the genre – something heart-wrenching.

Bones and All is based on Camille DeAngelis’ 2015 novel of the same name. It’s a coming-of-age romance story that centers on a young woman’s dangerous journey across the backroads of the country to escape actions she can’t seem to control. Maren has the urge to kill and eat the people she loves. She’s not the only one – there’s an underground culture of eaters out there and not all of them are safe.

This isn’t your average horror film or story of romance.

The movie debuted at the Venice International Film Festival last month to high praise and a long standing ovation. I’ve been curious about it since it was announced – it has all the right ingredients for a deeper horror story from its director to its amazing cast.

Bones and All Details

The cast is led by Taylor Russell as Maren and Timothée Chalamet as Lee. Also included are Mark Rylance, Michael Stulhbarg, Chloe Sevigny, Francesca Scorsese, Jessica Harper, and André Holland. Acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is directing from a screenplay by David Kajganich.

“A story of first love between Maren (Russell), a young woman learning how to survive on the margins of society, and Lee (Chalamet), an intense and disenfranchised drifter, as they meet and join together for a thousand-mile odyssey that takes them through the back roads, hidden passages, and trap doors of Ronald Reagan’s America. But despite their best efforts, all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and to a final stand that will determine whether their love can survive their otherness.”

Bones and All arrives in theaters on November 23rd.
