Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure is bringing a new Sanrio character to the screen. [Checks Notes] A talking egg yolk with a butt? This can’t be right…

I’m not super familiar with Sanrio’s entire cast of characters, so this show looks absolutely bonkers. An egg and a chick escape a restaurant cooler in order to find their mother. Over ten episodes they’ll adventure through the dangers of human spaces in order to find a family. And they must do it quickly before the egg goes rotten. Bonkers, I tell you!

WHAT?!

Gudetama is a sentient egg that was introduced by Sanrio in 2013. Their name derives from the Japanese phrase for lazy (gude gude) and the word for egg (tamago). Gudetama is constantly tired and doesn’t have a lot of interest in anything beyond being lazy and telling the world about it. They’ve (the egg is unfertilized and gender neutral) become a fan favorite to those that relate to their exhausted demeanor.

I get it, but a talking egg yolk with a butt is still weird.

Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure Details

The human cast includes Serena Motola, Akiyoshi Nakao, and Sarutoki Minagawa.

A lethargic, empathetic road trip series about finding one’s parents — for everyone who just wants to laze about! Having resigned itself to the fact that it will just end up on someone’s plate, Gudetama just wants to be lazy all the time. But, swept up by the go-getting, overbearing chick Shakipiyo, it leaves the refrigerator and heads out into the world. Together, these polar opposites go on an adventure to find their mother!
