Fans have gained a Superman but have lost a Geralt. The Witcher is being re-cast in season four with Thor’s brother in a risky move.

Netflix greenlit season four and dropped some news that’s not the best: Henry Cavill is leaving after season three. The actor had a short-term deal with the studio – everyone on the cast renegotiated heading into the fourth season – and decided it was time to depart. The show’s overseas shoots and demanding schedule likely influenced his decision and his already busy dance card that just got more enormous thanks to Superman.

Cavill said in a statement:

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

The Witcher Gets a New Geralt

Liam Hemsworth is replacing him (Chris’ younger brother and is known for his role in The Hunger Games franchise). He’s tall, built, and can look successfully scruffy.

Hemsworth is a franchise fan and is looking forward to joining the cast.

“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

I’ve got nothing against the actor – I’m not sure he’ll be able to carry the show following three seasons of Cavill. The ensemble cast is great. Cavill’s Geralt is the main draw, though. I don’t see this working out well for the show in the long run – there should be seven seasons. We’ll get one season with Cavill and several more years until we see Hemsworth as the White Wolf. I’ll reserve my sharper judgment till then.
