The upcoming Brothers’ War set for Magic will feature Optimus Prime and other Transformers as random drops in set and collector boosters.

Magic: the Gathering is transforming our expectations with the reveal of six new Transformers cards for the upcoming Brothers’ War set. Unveiled at Hasbro Pulse, these cards mark the first time a Universes Beyond set has appeared entirely within another set.

There will be 15 Transformers cards in total, available in two different styles: the 1980s style original Transformers, and the Shattered Glass style, where Autobots are evil and Decepticons are good. Shattered Glass, presumably, also takes place in a universe where red means go, and food doesn’t cost money.

Transformers In Brothers’ War

At Hasbro Pulese, Wizards of the Coast revealed six different characters:

  • Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader / Optimus Prime, Hero
  • Goldbug, Scrappy Scout / Goldbug, Humanity’s Ally
  • Starscream, Seeker Leader / Starscream, Power Hungry
  • Soundwave, Superior Captain / Soundwave, Sonic Spy
  • Flamewar, Streetwise Operative / Flamewar, Brash Veteran
  • Slicer, High-Speed Antagonist / Slicer, Hired Muscle

Each of these Transformers comes with two new keywords: More Than Meets The Eye and Living Metal. These new rules will help the double-sided Transformers appear as robots in disguise or their true fighting robot form. More than Meets the Eye allows players to cast them in converted mode for an alternate (lower) cost.

And Living Metal will ensure that your vehicles are also creatures. Meaning you won’t have to worry about crewing Optimus Prime or Megatron to go fight each other. You will have to queue up Stan Bush’s The Touch on your own, however.

At any rate, at present, designer Gavin Verhey announced that there were no plans to create “in-universe” versions of the Transformers cards. Meaning players won’t find an alternate version of Optimus Prime. Unless WotC decides they need to later on.
