The latest Final Fantasy XVI trailer gives us a deeper look at the world, characters, and lore of the upcoming game.

The latest trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV: Ambition is officially out. At four and a half minutes, this game trailer is on the longer side, and they use that time to really introduce us to the latest Final Fantasy setting.

Final Fantasy XVI

While the first look at the game was more focused on graphics and how good battles would look, this trailer took a very different approach. Now they’re giving you a closer look at the characters, the world, and the lore and seeing if the plot will hook potential players.

So far we know that there are a small handful of kingdoms in this world and this trailer gives us a short description of each. The Grand Duchy of Rosaria are “bastions of tradition.” “Ambition is divine,” in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque. The Iron Kingdom is “forged in faith and fear.” The Kingdom of the Waloed is “indomitable in its isolation.” And finally, the Crystalline Dominion “sits at the heart of Valisthea built around the tallest of all Mothercrystals, Drake’s Tail.” That last bit is from the official website.

The trailer opens by telling us that it’s been “fifteen hundred years since the fall of our forebears, and Valisthea has been slowly dying ever since.” Darkness is spreading, flames are going out, and people are flocking to the Mothercrystals. The trailer goes on to talk about the Imperial Army marching on Rosaria and a “war of the Eikons,” so it seems like this might be a fairly war-centric game.

There are also a few key characters you may want to know about; the Dominants of Bahamut and Odin. Dion Lesage is the loved and respected crowned prince of Sanbreque. He is the Dominant of Bahamut. The Dominant of Odin is Barnabas Tharmr. His skill in battle brought him to power and let him bring the rebellions of the eastern continent to come together under the Waloeder banner.

Final Fantasy XVI is currently officially scheduled to be available on PlayStation 5 and PC in the summer of 2023. And with less than a year until release, the team seems to be busy making sure they put out the best product possible. Director Hiroshi Takai had this to say in a press release about the game.

Hello!

Our third trailer is finally here and jam-packed with exciting new information that provides a better picture of how the game’s setting, lore, and characters tie in with our compelling narrative. Hopefully, it was worth the wait!

As the game edges closer to completion, the team has turned its full attention to debugging and final adjustments. Now that things are starting to come together, the game is sizing up to be something truly special.

We know you are all hungry to see more, but for now, we hope that this little peek into the world of FINAL FANTASY XVI is enough to keep you both satisfied and (of course) speculating until our next big reveal.
