Did you want a sequel to 1983’s A Christmas Story nearly 40 years later? Too bad, you’re getting it and it’ coming out a month before Christmas.

The original is about a man’s memories of childhood – some of which have become pop culture icons like his father’s leg lamp. It has become as much of a holiday staple as It’s a Wonderful Life – personally, I prefer Elf and The Krampus. It had annual marathons on cable networks since the mid-1990s and is part of the National Film Registry. All of this is apparently enough for some bigwigs at HBO to back a sequel.

Ralphie returns to Cleaveland Street to celebrate with his family and take a look back at the stories of his youth yet again. It sounds very nostalgic and derivative.

A Christmas Story Christmas Details

The movie is directed by Clay Kaytis (The Christmas Chronicles) from a screenplay written by Nick Schenk. Joining Peter Billingsley are returning cast members Ian Petrella, Zack Ward, Scott Schwartz, and R.D. Robb. New cast members include Julie Hagerty, Erinn Hayes, and more.

“The sequel follows an adult Ralphie in the 1970s, who returns to the house on Cleveland Street to deliver his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had growing up. With the same attention to real-life tone of the first, Ralphie reconnects with childhood friends, reconciles the passing of his Old Man, and sews the seeds for the origins of the beloved holiday classic.”

A Christmas Story Christmas premieres on HBOMax November 17.
