Sometimes, a little sibling rivalry is a good thing. Of course, such disputes usually end at death; not so for these undead warriors!

The new season of Warhammer Underworlds kicked off yesterday with the preorder for Gnarlwood. The box is chock full of brand-new rules and gorgeous new models. We talked about the bestial Gnarlspirit Pack earlier this week, so it’s only fair we take a look at their rivals, the horrifying Sons of Velmorn. Their tale is a sad one born of a desire to save their land, but as with many things in the Realms, even the purest intentions can have dire consequences.

Who are They?

Early in the history of the Realms, when the carnivorous Gnarlwood began to creep across Thondia, the mortal residents faced incredible peril. Hemmed in by the threat of Chaos to one side and the deadly forest to the other, they saw little hope of survival. One mortal king, Morlakk Velmorn, thought he’d found a way to save his kingdom: the cursed Tyrant’s Crown. Seeking to save his kingdom and preserve his bloodline, he placed the unholy artifact on his head, spelling the doom of his kingdom and the eternal punishment of his family. Now, the cursed king and his sons (legitimate and…less so) rise from their graves to repel any foolish mortal that dares trespass on his unholy domain.

How Do They Play?

Velmorn and the rest of his party fight as a unit, supporting each other like a well-oiled machine. They inspire whenever they or a friendly fighter they are supporting scores a critical hit, which is a lot easier than you might think. Velmorn himself can support every fighter on the field after he’s finished his turn, so you’ll want to make sure you activate him early in the round to maximize his effectiveness. His sons, each eager to prove themselves in their father’s eye, can also inspire as a reaction at the end of the final power step each turn. Of course, that jealousy only goes so far, so you can only inspire one of the warriors this way.

Sir Jedran, Velmorn’s illegitimate son and primary bodyguard does not share his half-brothers’ need to please their father, but that doesn’t make him any less useful. He is an absolute powerhouse, both offensively and defensively, and once he’s inspired, he can support all adjacent friendly fighters, regardless of his position relative to the enemy. Also, if he fights another champion like himself, i.e. another Large fighter, he can re-roll one of the attack dice whenever he’s inspired.
