The Eye of the Gods Table is getting an interesting re-work in the upcoming Slaves to Darkness Battletome.

Games Workshop is teasing one of the changes in the Slaves to Darkness Battletome with a new Eye of the Gods table. How is it changing? First up, let’s see what the rule actually is and go from there.

via Warhammer Community

“When a unit with the EYE OF THE GODS keyword slaughters an enemy HERO or MONSTERS, or seizes control of an objective, they roll 2D6 and get a blessing from the Eye of the Gods table. “

First things first, this isn’t the old rule as there are some new changes. Let’s go bit by bit and chew on this version.

This is fairly self explanatory. Did a unit kill a hero or monster unit and also have the Eye of the Gods keyword? Then they get to roll on the chart. They can do this at the end of each phase in which they killed one of those units (which means spells can trigger it in the hero phase) and if they happen to kill multiple hero/monsters in the same phase the get to roll for each one.

Here’s a new twist — did that unit with the Eye of the Gods keyword take an objective that was previously held by an opponent? They ALSO get to make a roll on the table. And multiple units can trigger this effect meaning they all get to roll on the table!

Now, some folks might be wondering “hey, does that mean I can have a unit with that key word that isn’t a hero?” Yes. “And can they turn into a Daemon Prince or a Spawn?! How is that going to work for a whole unit? Am I going to get, like, 10 Chaos Spawn at once?!” No. How do I know? Well, keep reading.

If I had to guess, I’d say turning into a Spawn is still a result of a 2 while a Daemon Prince ascension is probably a 12 still. Also, I’d wager that “snubbed by the gods” is also a result of a 3 now based on that range listed above. Also, just so you know that I’m not making this up, GW did say this:

“While the EYE OF THE GODS is usually found on heroes, from the ruthless Darkoath Warqueen to the mighty Centaurion Marshal, the Mark of Chaos Undivided grants that vital keyword to any MORTAL and OGROID units willing to worship the whole pantheon. These units have a smaller range of results, making each roll more reliable – you won’t see a whole lance of Chaos Knights transformed into squirming tentacular beasts.”

So yeah, not going to get a unit of Knights that turn into Spawn or Daemon Princes. Still, that does mean the Mark of Chaos Undivided might actually be worth taking!

So what sorts of fun things are we going to see on the chart? Well, the bad results are there as mentioned above:

If nothing else it’s worth remembering to bring an extra spawn or two just in case…

But there are some good results as well:

And we know that these two results are also on a 7 and 8 respectively. Which is good news and means that non-hero units can get a 6+ ward and/or extra rend on their weapons!

As a Slaves to Darkness player myself, I’m very curious about the rest of the chart. I’m also glad to see GW re-worked it and made it a little easier to trigger. There were several games I played where this chart didn’t even come into play — because of my army construction mostly. Turns out Archaon doesn’t really like to roll on this chart and neither did any non-hero units. But now they might! And that’s a good thing.

Your first crack at the new Battletome is in the upcoming Army Box and it’s coming to pre-order this weekend!
